I was there for 40 minutes the other day waiting to buy a single block of cheese. People waiting in line in front of me with their giant Costco carts piled high to the ceiling. You think any of those people would offer to let me go ahead of them? Not in a million years. The most selfish self absorbed people in the world shop at Costco. Over at Winco with their self check out machines, I would've been in and out of there in 5 minutes, but it's $5.98 for two pounds against $4.18 for one pound at Winco.

Most people complain about Self-Checkouts because they take away jobs from the people but in situations like this they're a huge convenience. I would've put the cheese back, drove to another store and got it. Might have cost more but not as much as BP medication.

'The most selfish self absorbed people in the world shop at Costco.' Yet there you were with your single block of cheese thinking everyone should let you in front of them?

Depending on how big a block of cheese you bought I may have paid the extra $1.80.

He wasn't EXPECTING people to let him go in front of them. He was just expecting a little common courtesy. Something the world is on a severe shortage of.

I used to support the cashiers by going through their lines instead of the machines, but when I started getting the "Oh it's him again" vibe from them, they lost my support. Now I figure I'm doing them a favor by staying away from them.

Your Costco doesn't have self-checkout machines? That sucks. Mine does - just used it today.

At the very least Costco should have an express 10 Items or Less line.

Seriously?!!? You mean they actually exist in some stores?

Been a Costco shopper for 30 years. The only buyers who walk in for one item are the guys buying a dozen roses on Valentines Day.

It is rare for me that the self checkout only involves myself. It usually gets jacked up on the weight of the item, code won't scan, or I'm buying beer and I need assistance to finish the transaction anyhow. I usually stand there waiting for someone to come help me.

Yep. Not all of them though. And, not necessarily the newest stores, it seems. Maybe they're just doing a trial, but I've only seen it in 2 or so Costcos, out of the ~10 or so that I've been to.

I like them too.

I hate at stores that have the express/10 items lane, there's always the person that unloads a whole cart, even after the cashier tells them it's 10 items only, forcing everyone who only needed 1 or 2 things to wait a half hour ... >:(

Having worked retail for going on 15 years, I'm not a fan of self checkout machines. Most retailers have them simply because people have requested to 'check themselves out', they're definitely not cheap and the cost of upkeep is very high. Financially, they do not replace trained cashiers, who can also take care of far more customers than any self checkout.

Yes even my Costco does, even the one I lived across in Chicago did as well?
Is Clovis CA ghetto enough that they don't care enough to add them?

Are they still using the old IBM POS systems?

I usually do whenever I go to Costco or groceries store, especially older shoppers or someone in a hurry with few items on a basket.

I've had 15 items and eyeballed the empty 10-or-less line on a slow day and had the cashier wave me in. Then, invariably, someone else shows up behind me and gives me the evil glare.

I had a 60 day trial at BJ's and the shoppers there mostly stare at their shoes; it's a filter for wierdos. Then I discovered Market Basket had pretty much all the same deals anyway.

The lines at Costco can be long. But they are long at Walmart too. They can be long at the supermarket as well.

And they can be empty too. It's all about time of day.

Common courtesy? I agree if someone is standing with one item versus another with a basket full, it would be nice. But that's not guaranteed and shouldn't be expected.

I look at it as if you drive at rush hour, expect to hit some traffic.

Hello, OP said, "I used to support the cashiers by going through their lines instead of the machines, but when I started getting the "Oh it's him again" vibe from them, they lost my support. Now I figure I'm doing them a favor by staying away from them."

Zo, tell me about thiz vibe you're feelink? Do you think people are holding you in low regard often?

Now you're doing them a favor by staying away. Your altruism knows no bounds. Kira
