I have two questions about Fram filters.The bypass valve is nylon and steel with a spring.Is the bypass valve on all of their filters set to open at the same pressure when the filter is clogged or is there different by pass valves for different pressures? Second I looked up Fram on Facebook when I entered Fram not Fram filters and they had a photo of the four fram filters but the end disks on the extra Guard/Tough Guard and High Milage looked like it was constructed of another material than fiber.I looked like plastic.Thanks Joe
 
If you mean the end caps on the media when you say "end disks", then yes, all FRAM filters use non-metallic media end caps. The ONLY FRAM filter that uses METAL end caps is the ULTRA.

As far as the bypass opening setting ... I would think FRAM will list that specification on each filter, and it could be different with different model filters. Check the FRAM website.

Thanks for the reply.The end disks that I see on their site does not look like fiber but a white plastic disk on the top/bottom of the filter and the media looks different.Joe

I doubt there is any degree of accuracy to when the bypass opens, my guess is the pressure needed to open varies pretty wildly between filters of the same part number. This isn't just a Fram thing, I am thinking this is across all manufacturers.
 
I thought I was on to something really great.I read that the two companies Fram/Luberfiner are going to improve their product line as time goes by.Maybe they just might redesingn/improve their Fram line of oil/air filters.I do have faith in Fram filters.I'm running them now.Joe

By-pass valves open at a specified pressure, depending on the engine that each filter is designed for.

For instance, my oil filter, a MC 910, is designed to have its by-pass valve open at 14.5 PSI for a 2.0L 4 cylinder engine.

A larger 2.7L V6 however requires that filters open their by-pass at 12 PSI.

The pressure at which the by-pass valve opens can be simply adjusted by increasing or decreasing the strength of the spring that controls the valve. This goes for both dome-ended and inlet-ended by-pass valves.

Not true. Spring tension is easily engineered.
 
Jim Allen is currently testing filters with a bypass-specific investigation in real-time in real-world application (on his truck). He's got a nice set-up where he can see pressure directly pre-filter and post-filter, indicating when BP activates.

Follow his threads.
 
In the animated pic above, the filter to the far right (High Mileage), it looks like there is some media in the center tube.
On the Ultra, it looks like the upper and lower disk/cap has an edge that folds over on the media.

That is depicting the metal end caps. The Ultra is the only FRAM oil filter that uses metal end caps.
 
The bypass valves are quite primitive, but they get the job done. The filter makers reverse engineer the OEM filter for each engine model (because the engine maker does not publish the specs for the filter) and set the bypass pressure to match (or come close) to that. There might be one filter maker that has a bypass valve that springs fully open, but most will begin to open gradually and be fully open a few psi higher...in any case, they work. What you DO NOT want to do is use a filter that has a different setting than what is specified for your engine. More is not better. Trust your engine's design engineers.


Has anyone seen any differences in the filters since Fram bought Champion Labs?

I think a lot of where a bypass valve is designed to open at (PSI setting) is dependent on the actual design of the filter media and the total media area - and of course the oil weight and oil pump volume characteristics. Reason I say that a lot of the design of the bypass is around the filter itself is because one filter may be specified by the designer to fit hundreds of different vehicles.

I doubt that a factory service manual calls out what the filters bypass pressure should be regardless of the filter brand. I guess to prove this theory, one would have to look at all the filters specified for a specific vehicle from many different brands, and compare what the bypass valve setting is amongst them all.

One exception to all this is the GM motors where the bypass valve is built into the block, and it is set to open at XX PSI regardless of the filter on the engine.

Makes sense now about the metal end caps.
Although I don't use Fram filters, if I was, the Ultra would probably be my pick.
