I have a LawnBoy C-78 engine that came with a Champion CJ14 spark plug. I found these no name low cost plugs and was wondering if anyone had tried them. On average i am replacing the spark plug once or twice a season for various reasons so i am thinking of trying a lower cost plug.

not to sound like a [censored] you get what you pay for.. does it Kill you to spend 5 dollar's a year? I had a customer when I first started in auto part's swap his spark plug for a Platinum one for his lawn mower just seen him come in last week to replace that same spark plug.maybe use a different material.

ok seriously I'd stick with a quality plug and just keep it clean. twist a champion, NGK, whatever in there and it will last years.

This 1.42 plug will cost you 10.50 with shipping though, why not just go to the store and spend $5? May be one of the only times you replace the plug if you go witha good one.

About a year or two ago, I saw some email going around that showed a spark plug factory in China. Basically, it was a couple of dozen people assembling spark plugs by hand. You can Google "Chinese spark plug factory photos" and see it. I don't know how much truth there was to the email, but I bet these plugs are the result.
I replaced the spark plug and air filter on one of my $109 mowers last year and the $15 that I shelled out hurt, but hopefully they saved money in the long run.

One of the reasons i want to change plugs is the champion tend to foul out. I noticed once it does, cleaning it using a Q-Tip and some alcohol does not do much to make it run again. I also noticed that the insulator around the electrode turns a light brown, and i am not sure if this is normal or not.

The C-78 engine is a 16 to 1 oil mix. But i use modern LawnBoy oil and run it closer to 32 to 1. Maybe it is running to hot and i have the wrong range plug?

Small engine plugs make great "filler" to reach a coupon threshold on advance auto, or to get free shipping on amazon.

Many hobby engine "original" plugs are low cost china plugs. I have had some that worked fine but in general, some "bad", low cost engines turns out to run great just by putting in a high quality plug.
A string trimmer of mine was a real dog until I found out
1. The ignition cable was 99% broken inside the rubber
2. The spark plug had a spark but for some reason, dropping in a ngk replacement plug made this trimmer the best ever. Perfect idle, easy start!
So no, do the opposite: Use quality plugs

Thanks for the comments, I think the lesson to learn here is that no name plugs can work but frequently work poorly. Champion spark plugs tend to foul on 2 cycle engines. And NGK plugs have a good reputation. I went with NGK plugs.

Choke.. GASP!

yeehaw you kill me man. LOL!

Yes, those silly putty Chinese spark plugs are one of the many reasons people have problems with these small engines.

Stens or the likes are usually re-badged name-brand products as far as I know.
