No more AGM batteries for me

Just changed out my AGM, lasted 27 months in desert heat. A little disappointing. The good news is it was a 4 year replacement warranty. So the the new unit has a 21 month replacement warranty, the balance of the original.
Yes I think AGM batteries may need to be heat protected or relocated out of the engine bay. What is your application?

Jan was historically cold in Virginia. For a 2 week stretch, it never got above freezing.
I’m talking about the day my alternator failed and the battery discharged. It was perfectly fine during that one week of the year we get into the teens/low 20s. I guess I should be more irritated about the new Remy alternator lasting only a year and 2 months. Now I have to ship that back at my expense to Rockauto for a replacement I no longer need (just went to AutoZone. If supposedly good brands only last that long what’s the point, AutoZone’s warranty is lifetime, Remy 2 years).

^^This post constitutes the beginnings of data we need.
I wonder if the failed AGMs tended to be older.

Which battery charger did you buy?
An Amazon special lol. It does work at the correct voltage and cut off when charged.

2022 thru 2024 Ford Maverick hybrids were known to require battery replacements a little too prematurely in only some cases. The fix was to put an AGM battery to eliminate what's called a sleep mode. The vehicles would still start and run however the sleep mode on the dash would come on and lot's of owners were not used to this therefore their batteries were replaced with an AGM starter batteries underneath the back seat. Therefore Ford input all AGM batteries on the 2025 and 2026 Ford Mavericks hybrids. . I have AGM batteries in all my vehicles except the Rav 4 which I am not sure if it's an AGM or lead acid battery since I really didn't pay any attention to that vehicle. Even my Corvette has an AGM battery I see no reason not to run these batteries in my vehicles. My old 2014 Jeep GC had an AGM battery too.

My son in laws f150 was going through an agm battery a year, under warranty. When the last one froze and split, the ford dealer used a flooded since agms were on backorder. That was over a year ago. Unless it was an oddysey or an actual deka, not Walmarts cheaped out EP. I’d never use one. 2 deka golds still testing way above their CCAs a 15 months later. Meanwhile my wife’s clarios Nissan agm that’s the same age, is gradually losing health. Today’s smart chargers are certain death for an agm.

AGM has slightly different charging requirements. It may not be suitable replacement for your vehicle but there are many that get their lifespan out of them no problem. My 75Ah deep cycle batteries on my basement sump pump have been idle for 6 years 7 months. Now that is in a cool basement just on float voltage of 14v so not a vehicle app. Are your daily drives long enough to recharge? Does your engine run real hot under the hood? It was a WM AGM brand EverStart? You also had a previous battery fail early in the same vehicle?
My parents 2018 Subaru Impreza lists a flooded and agm battery option. Does this mean two different alternators/ part numbers?

To add to the story on AGMs. this is a picture of a 2026 Cherokee 12V AGM. Located rear cargo area, accessed by a hatch on the driver's side. Dead, no start in our showroom. Early batch of Cherokees were held up "in port" for a month or so. When they ship, they are in what we call "ship mode", wipers, mirrors, basic dash, basic HVAC is all that is enabled.
Thoughtful they included a notch in the panel for the wrench to get enough ratcheting motion to remove the hold down bolt. Bottom left of the picture. I showed my shop foreman, as he walked by, he said, just use an air rachet. Sure, air lines in the showroom, okay then. Maybe a battery powered ratchet, but a very tight fit with the L shaped bracket above it.

Why do you say that?
An agm doesn’t do well with a charge less than 13.5. Smart charging systems will routinely throttle down to 12.8-12.9 for miles on road trips. My wife’s agm in her 24 is starting to lose health. My car with the same system but a flooded is still well above its ccas’s. These two cars are routinely on a pair of battery minder 2012’s.

Ahhhhh gotcha. My brain went right to smart battery chargers instead of the vehicle charging systems.

I’ve been planning on switching over to AGM next time I need a new battery. Probably first in the CRV as I wanted to bump up the group size anyway which is a fairly common thing on the earlier gens.

Yep. I test this theory out everytime I get a rental car, which is at least 10-12 times per year. It’s funny that almost none of the stop starts work due to the batteries being so worn down. Which is fine with me honestly.

Our 2021 Crosstrek is start/stop and no issues since day one. Gas oil and tires.

I'm in this camp of replacing the battery with the same chemistry as it came with from the factory. An H6 AGM came with my RAV4 and that's what I bought when the battery got weak.
Is your RAV4 a hybrid or does it have the auto start/stop? If not, the factory is not AGM.
