I bought a nissan quest with 98k miles on it. I bought it really cheap because it had the bad timing chain guides. I spent 2K at the dealership to get them changed. After they changed it and the oil, which i assume is nissan 5w30. Everything seemed perfect. After getting it home and looking over tons of posts i decided that i was going to run rotella 5w40 in it. When i startup the van and it is cold out, apx 50F or less, it makes a lot of noise in the cam chain area for a few minutes until its warmed up a little. After it is warm, the noise is gone and it is silent as a mouse. The startup up noise is significant. It almost sounds like a bad bearing. Not really clattering or anything. Is this normal for these engines? I have read they are sensitive to viscosity but i would think 5w40 would be fine in 40F weather.

I seriously doubt the noise is related to your oil. Plenty of people with that engine run Rotella 5w40. I am no engine rocket scientist but I would get a new oil filter (spend the money for a decent one) M1, Fram Xtended Guard and see what happens. My next move would to be a used oil analysis w/particle count, after that you have something you've got to work on. JMO. You have been around for while so you know what's up. I just think that would be the cheapest way to diagnose.

I would try 5w30 again and see if the noise goes away.
Many engines using camshaft phasers are sensitive to viscosity,it could be cam phaser noise your hearing.

+1 if the noise does not go away after switching i would ask the shop some pretty hard questions.

like someone else said it could be a bad adbv in the filter as well

Well the filter is the same. i had the nissan filter and oil in for only a week, then changed to rotella 5w40. It instantly started making that noise the next morning. I am new these engines and from what i read the tensioners are very sensitive to oil pressure. Im thinking that maybe there just not pumping up quickly and leaving a little slop in the chain for a min or two. But your right, this is a common oil for these engines so im starting to think that maybe when they did the chain job that maybe a part was defective or something. When it was cold, 30s, it was very noticeable for a good two to three minutes. Now today it was 70 out and 0 noise at startup. I think im going to let the dealer hear this, i just wanted to hear from some other VQ owners.

Hi.

Yes, definitely bring it up to the dealer. They could have performed the repair incorrectly. 40 weight oil is fine to 0 degrees C. It should not be the oil. 2-3 minutes of very audible noise is not something you should ignore, especially when they just performed the repair. Best bet is to bring it up to the dealer.
