Does anyone know what engine they are having trouble with?

"Nissan Stops Sale On Some 2006 Model Year Four-Cylinder Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs (6/2/2006 3:12:03 PM)
GARDENA, CA (June 2, 2006) – Nissan North America, Inc., today directed its dealers to stop selling certain 2006 model year, four-cylinder Altimas and Nissan Sentra SE-Rs because of reports of excessive oil consumption while it continues to investigate potential causes."

Or any specific problems with the KA 24s engine?

nissan needs to get it together...seems like their reliability has gone down since the 90's. the sr20 was indeed a tank.

a quick check on the b15 sentra boards and the qr25 has had MANY problems. now oil consumption problems? wow.

don't know if it's a big problem but over on the g35 forums, many owners complain of excessive oil consupmtion on the vq35 as well. although my g35 doesn't seem to consume any significant amount *knock on wood*

I'm about to get involved in helping the local dealer figure out why he has dozens of failed KA24S engines. Figure I might as well start looking for known issues.

We had a 2003 Altima 2.5SL before we traded it in for a new RL.

It had 28k on it and used Amsoil. Never had a engine problem or even used a bit of oil. Now it did have other issues like struts blowing, rattles, etc. But the engine was a jem.

I also know others that have had no issues with that engine in the SE-R/ALTIMAs. I think it might be kids ragging them out.

Dang, can't edit my post.

Okay, I owned two G35's, and never had one use oil. Both Amsoil, and both were raced at road race tracks. I break in my cars properly though.

The problem with Nissan's 2.5 is that the pre-cats disentegrate and parts get sucked into the engine, scoring cylinders, scuffing pistons and generally reeking havoc in the engine. This is a very old issue and I'm kinda surprised they're still dealing with it. My question has always been how parts on the exaust get sucked backwards into the engine, but it's happening to a lot of folks with 2.5 Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs.

Reviving this a bit, I was with the service manager for the dealer yesterday and he says when he put a good group II 15W-40 in a KA24 with 10,000 km on it last week and started it an hour later to give it to the customer, the distribution belt tensioner lost tension and started making noise. That draining the oil and putting in a cheap group I oil stopped the noise.

He also said the group II oil and some group I oils make the hydraulic lifters make noise, and just changing out the oil for the cheap stuff makes the noise go away.

Very hard for me to believe. I can't guess at what could cause this in a relatively new engine.

Any thoughts?

My first question would be why is he using 15W-40? Perhaps the oil passages in and out of the tensioner / lifters are too small for thick oil? That engine is probably spec'd for 5W-30.

The 2.5 also has a big problem with the screws coming lose from the butterfly valves in the intake and the screws then get sucked into the cylinder. If your car has over 60k, ie out of warranty, Nissan says tuff luck even though it was a well documented manufacturing defect and the problem happened under warranty but the symptoms didn't manifest until you were out

I believe the problem with 2006 2.5L engines is that during an assembly some of the engines got defective piston rings, witch resulting in oil consumption. Some of the new engines lost oil in first 500 miles. That’s why they stop sales of some 2006 models.

We are looking at relatively new engines. 5000 to 10000 Km, where changing the oil from a good one with 10 minutes on it to a bad one.
Anyone really know this engine? Is it possible for it to entrap air during the oil change?

Why 15W-40, the Dealer Service manager says so. But you may have a point, according to chec-chart 1997 and older were 20W-50, 1998 to present are 10W-30 or 5W-30.
