BUT

there is no such thing as a quick search on the BITOG site...unless you know which forum the topic is located

. Try it. If you perform a search which goes through all forums/categories it takes way too long.

And while I am off topic...it would be such an improvement to the site if one could subscribe to *any* thread/topic rather than just one that one has contributed to. (I bet this suggestion has been made a bunch of time in the past....maybe I should look it up

).

Btw, I would have added these thoughts to my previous post a bit ways up but the edit feature locks out far too soon...hmmm another tweak that should be considered.

I agree. I tend to do multiple searches in the individual forums in which I suspect there will be an answer (using the "paste" feature to avoid repetitive typing), that that's a pain too.

That previous thread got off-topic and was locked. Let's try to keep this one on-topic and full of useful information.

I have one of these engines in my '03 Sentra SE-R SpecV.

For 2002-2003 engines, the threat was either that the pre-catalytic converter (sitting on the exhaust manifold) would deteriorate and some of it would get injested into the motor, scoring the cylinders, increasing oil consumption then many drivers would run the engine out of oil, seizing the motor.

The second threat is the dreaded butterfly screw problem. Small screws in the throttle body (on the butterflies) would come loose, get injested into the motor (through the intake this time) and cause all kinds of damage before either destroying the motor or finding its way out.

The new problem with this same engine is (supposedly) ring composition ... a problem that has plagued other cars, most notably certain year Honda Preludes. A new ring design and composition is not sealing as well as intended. Shweet.

This may have something to do with proper/improper break-in.

For the record, my '03 2.5L uses no oil between changes ... even after 4,000 - 5,000+ miles and 40,000 miles on the odometer.

In all these scenarios you describe above would a detailed UOA show that something is wrong in the engine?

It would have to be some oddball secondary effect [as posted], as Nissan surely knows how to build a modern engine that doesn't burn oil right away.
