It's a replaceable element, inside a cast alloy housing. Mounted horizontally.
There's a 1/2" drive in the end of the housing. Unscrew, until the o-ring uncovers the drain port, then position the arrow on the housing "up".
Two holes align, and the oil drains from the filter housing into a tundish and drian pipe bolted to the side of the motor, into your drain pan.
Pull out the element, and pull it to pieces to see what you found, no hacksaws necessary.
Dry off both the engine part and the housing with a rag, press new element onto the spigot, change o-ring, screw back on, and in business.
It is the least mess oil and filter change I've ever done.
