Does anybody knows what are the specs for the Nissan Matic D ATF?

I want to go synthetic in my 2002 Maxima and I'm currently considering Mobil 1 ATF. The user manual recommends Nissan Matic D or a Dexron III/Mercon compatible ATF. I think Mobil 1 ATF should be as good or better than the Nissan but I just want to make sure.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Don't know the specs on Nissan D, but I do know a lot of guys on the Maxima.org site use Mobil 1 ATF. Many use Amsoil ATF too. I just changed the tranny fluid in my 01 Max 2 weeks ago and used Pennzoil ATF. Didn't want to pop for too much $$$ on ATF yet as this was the 1st time I ever changed it myself. Now that I know what I'm doing I'll use Mobil 1 next time. I have an Altima too that turns 30K miles in a few months. Similiar tranny to the Max. I plan to put Mobil 1 ATF in it too.

Thanks Roger. Did you used the drain/refill method? How many quarts did you end up using? I will be doing mine sometime during the summer/fall, as soon as the Max hits 15k.

No, I did the flush method: drained by opening the pan bolt, then removed and cleaned the tanny pan (filter and magnets too), reinstalled the pan with a new gasket, added new ATF to replace what I drained. The pan bottom and magnets were nasty by the way. Then I disconnected the return line from the radiator, and pumped out two quarts at a time from the radiator line into a gallon container (while reinstalling 2 quarts at a time to keep the tranny full) until the fresh fluid started to come thru. All together I used 12 quarts...4+ for the initial drain, plus the four 2-quart drains from the radiator line. I'm pretty sure the tranny capacity is about 10 quarts to begin with.

Here is a link at the Maxima site with pics showing the location of the correct radiator line to drain.

A search on that site will also yield a few good posts with more explicite directions than what I just described...which are worth reading ahead of time if this is the first time you've ever done this job.

12 quarts of Pennzoil ATF and the new gasket cost me $45. My local dealer wanted $99 for just the flush without cleaning the magnets or the filter. Plus, I'd would have had to sit in the waiting room and watch the mechanic have all the fun!

You can get 4-5 quarts out if you do a drain and fill. The total capacity of the transmission is 10 qts. There's many writeups on the org on how do the self flush method.

My book only goes through the year 2000, but recommends Dexron III in all Nissan Automatic trans through that year. Capacities vary from 6.3 qts to 10 qts, even within the maxima line (SOHC is 7.3 and DOHC is 10.0)

Roger, I was under the impression that the Maxima does not have a trans filter, just a screen. Did your have a filter or did you clean the screen? If the screen, did you remove it to clean it? Thanks

Sorry, it's a screen. Not a filter. I did remove it. The screen was clear of any substance when I did that. However it's entire housing was coated with a gray-colored substance. So I gave it a shot of carb cleaner and it looked good as new. It was a bear to remove as there were 10, or so, bolts attaching it to the bottom of the tranny. They were different sized bolts, which made for and interesting reinstall too. So line them up in order if you do this job yourself.
