There seems to be a consensus that a Nissan OEM Chinese FRAM filter is required for the powertrain warranty to remain intact?

This seems nuts to me! The guys over on a Frontier forum are saying that there is an issue with the timing chain tensioners on the VQ40DE and Nissan blaming aftermarket oil filters.

I thought they can't do that unless they provide you with the filters free of charge?

I was going to run Pureone filters on it, but now I'm worried somewhat?

I would send an email to Purolator and ask them this question. If other manufactures as Purolator, WIX, Champion Labs, etc., make filters to meet the exact Nissan specs, then yes, Nissan and their dealer would have to furnish you with the oil filter. If it is a special filter and no one else makes one like it, then they can charge you for it.

If that were true then Nissan would need to provide the filter FOC. See M-M Warranty Act.

Buy the P1 or other filter of choice, keep the receipt(s), document the oil change information (date, mileage, etc.), and save. You should be good to go. Nothing special about the Nissan OEM filter. Taking one off very soon and will post pics.

I e-mailed Purolator with a similar question about my Hyundai. Got back a very timely and thorough e-mail pretty much summarizing the above posts, along with Purolator's warranty and a copy of the M-M Warranty act.

I believe the ones that were made in Japan were made by DENSO before Nissan switched to a different supplier. I'm using DENSO's aftermarket filters on my Nissan's QR25DE engine and haven't had any problems. And after cutting one open and seeing the quality (see this post), I'm going to stick with the DENSO while I have them. With that said, based on my research, I wouldn't hesitate to use any of the following:

Purolator PureONE PL14610
Mobil 1 M1-110
K&N HP-1010
Bosch D3323
WIX 51356 (or equivalent NAPA Gold)
DENSO 150-1010 (or 150-1009)

Had pretty long experience with daughters' 90 Maxima. Car now crushed and gone. The OEM filter I believe was made by Union Sangyo, and I used to buy NPN for it which are the same as Union. They look like the filter shown, and I suspect Denso does a rebox of the Union filter, as even the box shows the Denso endcap design, or no endcaps. The Union is a very fine filter in my book, still have a new NPN somewhere. If I knew how to post pics I would do some cuttin' on some old filts. Everything, on the old Nissans I know, was very well made and well designed. Even the black cloth seats on the crushed 90 were perfect condition after 20 years in CA sun, no wear to see, no sagging, nothing, and more comfortable than most any seats I have sat in.

No... DENSO manufactures their own filters. There might be a few sizes they source from another manufacturer to complete their line, but the majority (if not all) are their own.

Also, not all DENSO filters have the no endcap design, despite what the box may show. Check out the link in my previous post. The cut-away on the box shows no endcap, but in the one I cut open, there's clearly metal endcaps.

The cam-chain tensioner issue with Nissan has been around for some time on the VQ35 V6 engines - probably the same setup on the VQ40. It's a faulty tensioner design that causes the issues. The multi-link cam-chains that run the two cams in each head have the pointed teeth rubbing on nylon type material that gets chewed down until the chain is rubbing on the steel plunger of the tensioner.

Nissan should have used roller chains for these short cam-chains ... that would have made the design bullet proof IMO. Do some searching on the Maxima chat boards and you'll find photos of the tensioner blocks chewed down an inch allowing the chain to rub and whine on the metal plunger.

If Nissan requires the use of their filters they must provide it for free by law. No company can require the use of their product only to maintain a warranty unless they provide you with the items for free.

Now if the aftermarket filters are worse is a whole nother beast.

Correct as per your Moss Magnuson Act

That's what I was commenting about. It is very odd your box misrepresents what is inside. Although the average Joe isn't going to cut the filter open to find out. If the filter itself says Denso and Thailand, then it is understandable.

Sorry, I don't follow you. They're not going to put a filter inside a box that says "Made in Thailand" if the contents of the box (i.e. the filter) aren't made in Thailand.

Also, why do you think the cut-away view on the box has to exactly match the filter inside? We all know that the pictures on all kinds of packaged products are "representative".

I suspect that of all the filters that DENSO manufactures, they have various designs/constructions, and they have those various designs/constructions for good reason.

Does it say Denso etc on the filter? Take a look at a Denso part website like:
http://www.densoaftermarket.com/catalog/catalog.php?part=oilf

They show the filter to be a 150-1008,with the name clearly emblazoned. The 1008 is a little more expensive than 1009 or 1010. I don't think they put their Thai product box and picture with a filter with no name or place of mfg. and different construction. That would a big no no liability wise.
Good luck with it all, if it works well that is what is important. All I was doing was making an observation, and it seems correct to me still.

Yes. The filter itself has a label on it that says DENSO along with their "First Time Fit" slogan and the part number.

Who is "they" and what application are they showing 150-1008 being the part number for? The 150-1008 is the "shorty" version and cross-refs to the Mobil 1 M1-108, K&N HP-1008, PureONE PL14612, etc.

Maybe at some stores. Amazon shows the 1008 for $6.15, the 1009 for $7.33, and the 1010 for $8.70. My source is the other way around with the 1010 being the least expensive, then the 1009, and then the 1008. But what's price have to do with anything?

What was the observation? That the box shows a picture that's slightly different than the particular part number that came in the box? I guess I don't find that odd in any way. It's often the case with all kinds of products.

Denso link I posted has info I got. It isn't hard to see what I was saying. Please show picture of can logo side, not for combat, but for knowledge. I'm done with it, fight with someone else.

To satisfy the warranty requirements you must use parts that exactly meet the original spec. The car makers do not publish the oil filter specs.

The filter makers reverse engineer the OEM filters. If you use an aftermarket filter spec'ed for your engine, and that filter causes engine damage, then the filter maker must cover the damage claim. If you use a filter that is not specified for your engine, you pay for the claim--so much for those who want an oversized filter that isn't spec'ed for that engine.

If you use aftermarket filters and have slow developing long term damage, good luck. You're in legal limbo. Everybody will be pointing fingers at everyone else, and you're stuck.

If you think there might be an issue with that engine, why not buy a half-dozen or dozen OEM filters from the cheapest on-line source? If they're good enough for Nissan's warranty bean counters, they should be good enough for your engine.
