Nissan and Toyota are issuing rationing

The headline is bunk but the article say allocation - not rationing.

Allocation can be like a ration but often it’s simply used so that a few don’t Hoover up all the supply and try to raise prices.

Dealers can go elsewhere but on allocation there likely still getting the best price. Especially now.

As someone who stocked up on oil like it was covid TP, I didn't pay more than $20 for 5 qts not counting the redline I bought for the wife's car. Which was the cheapest I ever bought it for. Articles like this have been screaming Wolf since day 1!

SOPUS dropped Dexos license on Pennzoil Platinum and Quaker State Full Synthetic.

Exxon released a news letter a few days ago noting formulation changes.

Oil will become lower quality and more expensive.

$250 oil changes with whatever sketchy bulk swill at your local Take 5 oil change? Not a concern for BITOG nerds with their sweet pre-Hormuz synthetic oil stash bought on sale or rebate!

Panic wont hit until your local quickie lube is out of oil and news spreads on social media. That’s when the shelves at your local Walmart, NAPA, Autozone, etc. will get wiped clean.

My local Honda dealer has always advertised $29.95 oil changes with genuine Honda OEM oil (P66) and OEM filters. I assumed this has always been a loss leader to bring in other work. Yesterday I got the typical text message advertising an oil change and suddenly its $49.95.

I picked up a couple jugs of 0w20 at Costco yesterday. They had lots of oil. I'm up to 6 jugs at home and set for a few years now.

The article is full of BS:
>0W-20 and 5W-30, the two most common factory->fill grades in their US lineups.

5w-30 has not been used by Toyota for like 10+ years.

>An engine spec’d for 0W-16 cannot simply take >whatever is on the shelf. Modern engines with tight >bearing clearances

Here we go again with tight bearing clearances….
It's amazing how tight bearing clearances HAVE to have 0w16 or below...until there's a turbo involved, then you have to use higher grades so the oil doesn't cook off. Almost like that higher grade is fine to begin with lol

I know VW dealers may deviate. I suspect that an individual dealer is not constrained to the recommended oils but the corporate entity must not advise against the EPA award letter except under these extreme circumstances.
Myrtle beach Kia pumps 5W30 into everything well with the exception of an ev lol

I service a friend's newer RAV4 hybrid that calls for 0w16. I used 0w20 Mobil 1 last time.
I switched my 2021 RAV4 to 5w30 at 30,000 miles. I have not noticed any difference in economy, nor startup. I disabled the start/stop feature upon buying the vehicle. I live down south were we may get below 32 degrees 2 or three times each winter so winters are not a concern. I am more concerned about the low viscosity during our hot summer months. OCI's are 5,000 miles.

Regarding the mandated low viscosity oils for the newer cars, now 0w8 in some cases...I am too cynical at my age of 78 to believe it is not anything but maximizing the fleet mileage rate to avoid the excessive government fines for manufacturers that don't meet the prescribed numbers. I have a 2024 Honda Gold Wing motorcycle, 6 speed transmission, 1800cc water cooled engine that operates at about 1800 rpm at 55/60 miles per hour but capable of cruising at over 100 mph. It is essentially a high performance, 6 cylinder automobile engine and Honda recommends 10w30 motor oil. How long ago in the past has 10w30 been recommended for cars? The slippery slope has been 10w30, 5w30, 5w20, 0w20,0w16, 0w8...what next! I's sticking with the 5w30 automotive oils and 10w30 or 10w40 for the motorcycle.

The manufacturers have shot themselves in the foot by brainwashing the public that 0w-8 or 0w-16 is mandatory. It is so ridiculous. With the internet, you would think that Americans had easy access to the Toyota and Nissan manuals from Australia or Europe showing that 0w-20, 5w-20, 5w-30, 0w-30 are all adequate.

It’s not really them. They are just complying with what’s regulatory.

Apparently it is. WTI down to $70 today.
The issue here was not the general price of crude, but that the primary supplier of certain synthetic base stocks had been bombed and were unsure when it would be able to re-open. It appeared it was specifically targeted.

Of course things could be embellished.

If you want group 1 or maybe even group 2 oil in the USA there likely would be no shortage if they closed Hormuz forever.
