Nissan 3.5 ltr filter

All very good info and great discussion.

I'll try the Wix and Hastings as they are readily available for me.

Mikep

I also vote for the Wix/Carquest Premium/Napa Gold filters for my 03 Max and my new 03 Mazda Protege5, which handily also uses the same size filter.

The oversized Mobil M105 rubbed on my front left tire (225/55/17). Haven't tried the M110, now using the M108/Bosch 3320/ equiv in Wix, can't remember the part number. It's the super tiny one.

Has EIGHT LARGE inlet holes compared to the six smaller ones in most other applications on that size (K&N, Amsoil, Mobil, Bosch). And the nice silicon ADBV. Just eyeballing it, it appears it would flow better. The photos I've seen of the interiors of Wix's appear to be constructed well.

Plan keep the tiny Wix in both cars, and just change the filter every 3000 miles, the oil X2, X3 that.

I run the Napa Gold 1344 / Wix 51344 / Car Quest 85344* instead of the 51356 on my Nissan.

It is approx 40-50% larger than the 51356 or Nissan 15208-9E000. I like the extra size when shooting for longer drain intervals.

* All the same filter.

Here is a picture of the difference.

The thread and gasket dimensions are dead on for my engine.

Great pic GSV!

I wonder if that larger filter would fit on an '03 Pathfinder? Then again, at 3750 mile drain intervals (during warranty period) it may be overkill.

Mikep

I didn't realize the 1356 and the 1334/1344 had the same threads and baseplate dimensions.

Everyone knows that the NAPA number and Wix number for a given filter is the same except the Wix has a "5" in front of it, right?
wink.gif

The Wix 51334/51344 are the same except the '44 is taller and the bypass valve is different. Check the specs. I think the larger one is 8psi and the smaller one is something around 20psi.

I know both these filters fit my '90 Integra and '95 Civic although the larger '44 would rub slightly on part of the engine. It never caused a leak in the filter canister but I was always afraid it might.

I was also afraid that the lower PSI rating of the larger '44 would mean that the filter would be open (in bypass mode) more often. ... probably not a problem with the thin Mobil 1 I was using at the time.

Still, when the 51344s became difficult and more expensive to buy around here, I gave up on them.

Totalled,

The M1 110 and Bosch 3323 are the same diameter as the M108/Bosch 3320. The M110 and Bosch 3323 are about an 1.5 inch longer than the thimble sized M108/3320. These are a good compromise size for the Maxima in either 3.0 or 3.5 versus the oversized filters like the M105.

I personally use the Bosch 3323 on my 2k Maxima, but will check out the NAPA/Wix equilavent at the next OCI.

mikep,

I've got the 2.4 liter I4 in my truck and the filter fits fine. If you've got the 3.5 V6 I can't say how it will fit.

Nissan makes a pretty bulletproof motor but I do think their oil capacity tends to be skimpy. I'll grab all the extra capacity {and filtering media} I can.

Bror,
The following is from the Wix site:
Part Number: 51344
Height: 4.069
Outer Diameter Top: 3.242
Thread Size: 20X1.5 MM
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 8-11
Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes

Gasket Diameters
Number O.D. I.D. Thk.
Attached 2.490 2.200 0.148

Part Number: 51356
Height: 3.402
Outer Diameter Top: 2.685
Thread Size: 20X1.5 MM
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 8-11
Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes

Gasket Diameters
Number O.D. I.D. Thk.
Attached 2.475 2.173 0.233

The gasket on the bigger 1344 series fits my filter baseplate with room to spare.

I am not sure about the Hastings or Wix. The Bosch 3323, M1 110, and Purolator L14620 are the standard sized filters for the VQ 30 or 35.

The Amsoil SDF 20 fits both 3.0 and 3.5 engines. The Mobil 1 M1-105 is the oversized filter for the 3.5 liter.

I would cross reference the Amsoil SDF, Hastings, and Baldwin since they are made by the same manufacturer.

Thanks John. I didn't know those three were made by the same company. I wonder how similar the garden variety Hastings is to the more expensive Baldwin and Amsoil filter? Could be a very good value. A local auto supply near me sells Hastings at about $5.00 each.

Mikep

The AMSOIL filter has a different filtering medium than either the Hastings or Baldwin couterparts.

Thanks for the specs, GSV. It appears that while the 51334 and 51344 are not direct replacements, the 51344 will fit the bill (space permitting) wherever the 51356 is spec'd.

I'm like you, the bigger the filter, the more capacity and filtration area it has, the happier I am.

I'll have to see if I have room for a 51344.

I was not implying that the Hastings and Baldwin were equal to the Amsoil SDF nor was I implying that the Bosch is equal to the Mobil 1 filter. My only issue with the Amsoil SDF or Mobil 1 filter is cost. These are probaly the best two filters on the market.

By trying a Baldwin or Bosch for $6 versus the $10-13 for SDF or Mobil 1, I am looking for the best bang for $$$.

This is what I said earlier in the thread.

Hastings is supposed to be a good quality filter. Baldwin is the maker of the Amsoil SDF oil filter made to their specifically to their specs. All three are made to different specs and I am not sure which is better.

mikep, why not use the SuperTech 7317 from WalMart? It is an exact replacement for the 9E000. I use it in my SE-R which calls for the 9E000. Good quality from Champion Labs and you cant beat the price.

Bamaro, the SuperTech 7317 is the taller of the two Supertech Nissan filters?

I've seen both ... the thimble and the elongated thimble. Still kinda puny ... even when compared to the Wix 51356. And all are little compared to that healthy Wix 51344.

I had put a Supertech 3595a/2808 on my Honda Civic for a super-short duration oil change and when I initially fired up the engine, it was a few additional seconds before the oil pressure light turned off. I suppose I'm just a bug, but I've been leery of them ever since.

Still, for $2, I can see why some would go for them, especially during short duration drains. I have a 2808 on our 2-cylinder Honda tractor. I can

As for Amsoil & Mobil 1, I am leary of the super high efficiency filters. I knew a Honda Prelude owner who claimed he blew two of them open. The side of the can (according to him) split and oil shot all over the place. In both cases he was autocrossing ... and high in the rev band.

I suppose he could have been making this up ... but it does tend to go along with the idea that the filters with the denser media are more restrictive and the weakest link was the oil filter canister ... thick as the Mobil 1 is.

I believe there was also some Ford Contour SVT owners who knew not to use the Purolator/Motorcraft filter on their car for high-RPM duty. Again, oil starvation due to restriction was the reported problem.

Yes, the ST6607 is the shorter one and matches the 65F00 Nissan filter.

Not filter related though

There was (is) oil starvation problems...mainly during high speed right(?) hand turns with high RPM.
I'm not an SVT owner (love to have one though), but I have heard a bit about that problem.

Have owned a lot of Nissans with the v-6 and currently own a 2k3 Maxima with VQ35. I think the OEM filter that is stock on the '99 Max(9E000) is the best overall filter for the car based on filtering ability( basically a 20 micron filter) and flow considerations. It is well constructed and reasonable in cost at about $4.37 from any of the Nissan dealers that sell parts on-line. Stay away from the even smaller filter that Nissan now specs for the VQ. Not only is it smaller, it is poorly constructed (cardboard end caps) and doesn't use the better adbv the 9E000 does. The 9E000 fits fine btw. As an alternative I used to also use the Bosch(aka Champion)3323 but they recently switched production to Mexico and these newer ones aren't as well constructed according to those who have taken them apart on the Maxima.org site.

What exactly is the knock on Bosch and STP filters now that they are made in Mexico? I saw that post on the Maxima site too, but it wasn't very specific about what's different now.

"The WIX 51344 will not fit the 2003 Nissan 3.5L dual cam V6 engine."

Why is that, 'Kule?

Not room enough for the larger canister?

You're right. I just took a look at a Bosch that I have for my VQ Max and it is not of the design or place of manufacture as mentioned in the NTPOG review of a Supertech filter that was the basis for their recommendation to not use the Bosch filters. They claim that Supertech, Bosch and STP are all made in Mexico, use an ineffective by-pass design and poor media quality. I just wrote a long reply on the Maxima site questioning the validity of that recommmendation.
