Nicest Boss to work for

A lot of people complain about their Boss at work.
I just finished reading an older post about this.

Anybody ever have a really good Boss ? ? ?
I did when I was in High School (1975).
It was an Office type environment and I use to empty garbage cans and keep things clean.

I worked after School and it was a 4.5 mile walk to work (Monday thru Friday).
When my Boss found out, he would have an office girl stop working and pick me up at School/take me to Work.
Oh sure, I did the walk myself many times, but it sure was nice to get a ride for several Months.

Summer Vacation came and my Boss asked if I wanted to work full time for the Summer.
I said OK, knowing I'd have to walk the same distance from Home to Work.
But I still remember this Boss going out of his way to pick me up at Home for a couple Weeks.
WOW, the Boss picked me up and took me to work.

I look back on that now and hope they thought I was a decent kid and not ungrateful.

Anybody ever have a really good Boss ?

That truly makes the work environment great.

My current boss now is absolutely fantastic. Very respectful to me, supportive, and thankful when I go above and beyond. I am consistently being reminded how well valued I am... it really makes a difference in how you portrait yourself and feel when you go home or come into work.

I'll say, mine is pretty good. On the 100 different projects that I start in on, per year, he'll know about 2 or 3 of them. I do my thing, he does his. We stay out of each other's way.

A good boss (and a competent one) can transform the work environment.

I wouldn't be where I am now without my boss from my campus job I had during college. I now have a job in the field that I worked in (IT) at the campus job instead of what I went to school for.

My boss at the time needed help working in the data center, and was kind enough to train me in many different aspects of the job. He trusted me to handle expensive equipment and run certain systems and projects, where normally I would just be a minimum wage employee who delivered mail around campus. I also put in the necessary effort, and went above and beyond to build that trust and had a good work ethic. It goes both ways. There were times he was a bit hard to be around, because he was over stressed and often frustrated. We always had a mutual respect though, and he knew he could count on me for critical tasks.

There is a big difference (IMO) between a nice boss and a respected boss. I've had a few nice bosses, but they were often useless in terms of fighting for their employees or disciplining those who didn't pull their weight.

The 2 best "bosses" I ever had was the owner of the hardware store I worked at from 14 till 26, the other one was my Sarg, I had in the Army, both were like 2nd fathers.

I had a Commanding Officer on USS Michigan SSBN 727, Claire "Wild Bill" Hanson, Stand up man. Always honest, took care of the crew. Knew and remembered your wife and kid's first names. Always happy and always positive which is important when you are 19 and stuck in a tube for months at a time. Always knew how to instill pride. Always made you feel like a big family (you really are)

He was truly a leader of men. The 3rd most powerful man on the planet when deployed. He never made you feel like that. Was never condescending. Realized we were all young and mistakes would be made. Always took the opportunity to ask how we were and what could be done better. I learned a lot from that man as a young sailor. You never wanted to disappoint him, you always wanted to do the right thing because he did.

If they said I was going back to sea with him today and I might not come back, I wouldn't be able to pack my bags fast enough and get underway.

I've been fortunate enough to have 3 in my 30+ years of working, including my current one.

They were great in that they were there when you needed them and stayed out of your way when you didn't. As long as you got things done, correctly, and on-time (or earlier), you pretty much had free reign to do what you wanted to. At the same time, they didn't tolerate deadwood.

The last bit about Deadwood is spot on. I've had great bosses but they were way too willing to tolerate laziness or incompetence. If you are a hard worker and hold yourself to high standards then nothing is more demoralizing than a boss who lets someone be a major slacker.

Easiest way around that is to not worry about the other guy. You do what you think is right. You do your job/task to the best of your ability.

I'm a teacher. I report to a principal and superintendent. Both are extremely approachable, good people. They're the best school administrators I've ever worked for.

Exactly! Been there done that. Had lazy coworkers and supervisor expected me to pick up their slack. I told her it'll be a cold day in [censored] before I do that. I'm not their momma,they're grown adults,and I'll be glad to do their work on top of mine as soon as you double my pay because I'd be doing the work of two people. Until then,no way!

I have a good boss. He appreciates my contributions.

You can work in the fanciest building, the nicest office, have the newest equipment at your disposal, and a great title... but all this means little if your boss or coworkers are jerks.

Assuming there is room for advancement, the hard worker should get promoted and can then apply their own management style to the slackers.
If a slacker gets promoted over a hard worker, then it's time for the latter to leave...

I currently have the best boss I have ever had. Very supportive, easy going, fun, and overall just a great guy. This is why I choose to keep driving 45 minutes to an hour to get to work.

My boss is great. I've been very lucky my whole life except a 9 month period with a horrible boss. It wasn't until I got unprofessional with him that he settled down a little. Another guy I worked with pinned him against the wall and threatened to kill him. My current boss is threatening to retire and we're very upset at the thought of him leaving.

My boss got fired a few months ago. Actually, they "eliminated his position". So now I don't have a boss.

Ok, technically I probably do but I'm not sure exactly who that is. No one has ever told me who my boss actually is now.

When bosses start acting like "us mechanics" don't matter and poo all over everyone; things go south in a hurry. I'm glad the new boss is a hands on guy
