Wife's Forester is at about 55k miles and calls for plugs at 60k. Original plug is NGK 91899. Denso 4712 is half the price but most sources say they are only for up to 2018 (direct injection started in 2019) although the local parts store says they interchange. Anyone know the difference?

If Denso says they're suitable, I wouldn't hesitate. On Japanese(-heritage) cars, NGK and Denso almost always can be interchanged. I've seen big price differences too and never understood why. One thing to check is the mileage rating - both usually offer "regular" plugs as well as "long life" plugs and the price reflects this.

Why mess with success? NGK oem all the way. Especially considering how limited in space for plug removal.

This is the way I am leaning - I haven't been able to find Denso source saying 4712 is right, only 3442 which is the same price as the NGKs.

There is also a Bosch one but doesn't seem to be any stock locally.

So I saw your post and jumped on Rock Auto to check it out. RA show the NGK you mention, but not the Denso. In the latter it calls for the 3442 and they are ~$1.60 more per plug. Note both are Iridium. If you want to do more research, go to the dedicated Denso site and see what plug they spec/recommend. For me I'd go NGK, which happens to be all I use on my Hondas.

Edit: Denso site parts look up says P/N #3442. That's final confirmation for me.

Both are reputable brands and work very well in Asian vehicles. That said, I'm cheap and I'd go with the most economical one as either is rated as an extended use plug (e.g. exceed the 60K miles you'd be looking for).

Likely at some point in the near future, the NGK and Denso plugs will be the same. Niterra/NGK bought the spark plug and o2 sensor business from Denso.
