In general, you want as wide a gap that will not misfire.
There is a margin from factory settings.
Almost all cars can use .005" [sometimes more] over the max, if the ignition system is in perfect shape.
Your max load on the ignition is at mid RPM torque peak conditions.
AT high RPM, the load is less, but is much more frequent, and poses a different problem.
