I need some of you knowledgeable guys to steer me in the right direction. I bought a 2006 4runner with a little over 14K miles and did an oil change. I used Mobile 1 5w30 and a Toyota oil filter. The problem is the oil that came out of the engine had the consistency of crude oil straight out of the ground. I'm sure it had the original oil in it. Is there anything else I need to do? Is there an additive I should put in? Should I run this oil 1000 miles and change it again? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dadgum none oil changers! I bet they belong to PETA but yet abuse their cars!
I'd change the filter and of course Mobil1 will work well in that engine. But yes I'd run a short OCI of maybe 1000-2000...then do it again....AutoRX maybe over kill here...but sure would not hurt! I'd go through everything. Replace the PCV valve/air filter.....lucky car getting you as a new owner sounds like

I'm not in the oil tycoon families and have never seen crude oil as it comes out of the earth, could you describe it in other terms? Black? (Used oil almost always looks black.) Gooey? Chunks?

Keep an eye on the fresh oil you put in there, let the BITOGers know how it looks on the dipstick after 1000 miles.

if it just looked very black, there is nothing necessarily wrong with that, that would be very normal if the oil had been in there awhile. Even if it were the factory fill the amount of harm done would be pretty minimal. I like to see factory fills drained in the 500-2000 mile range (personal preference). If you can take a peak down the oil fill hole in the valve cover maybe you can see if there is any noticeable "gunk" on parts in there. If there is, then rolling on a cycle of ARX would be a great idea, if it looks clean, just start with a reasonably short interval (1-3k) on the mobil, and extend the next interval to something more normal, like 5k+ (I'm not sure what Toyota recommends here)

Thanks guys for the input. As for how the oil looks: Very dark with slight golden, carmel tone and thick. I have sent off a sample to Blackstone labs and should have the results in a couple of days.

Odds are, you purchased a lease vehicle. More & more lease purchasers do very little oil maintainance. I would do a shorter-than-normal OCI (5k) for the nexrt two OCIs. Monitor the oil when changing. Also monitor the color of the dipstick. I like a clear dipstick for 2K- minimum.

You are absolutely correct Triple_Se7en. It was a Toyota lease for all of 5 months. I picked it up from a wholesaler that bought it at auction and flipped it. Based on my purchase price, I got a heck of a deal. But not so if the engine damaged. All of ya'lls replys make me feel alot beeter about.

Thanks to everyone.

Jed Clampett could confirm your visual comparison.
I'd swap that oil out sooner than later. Maybe a quick change next time, too.
I also have no reason to really worry about your engine.

My daughter bought a Toyota Tercel years ago, and sometime later I asked if she had been changing the oil. Her blank look told it all- 14,000 miles on the car and I had to add two quarts to register on the dipstick. We had a little discussion and I told her to get it changed and then do it again after 1000 miles. She got the first change, but didn't do the second for 7000 miles! Car had over 100K mi on it and was running just fine when she got rid of it. She's driving a trashed out Taurus right now and my feeling is that she's found the perfect car.
