I will be replacing the OEM steel wheels in the future on my truck. I'm going to go with a slightly larger rim and tire with a more aggressive tread, however nothing obnoxious.

How do people approach this? I have to imagine that I may change tire brands down the road and therefor have a different total tire diameter.

Can I purchase a cheap steel spare that would allow for an identical tire to be mounted on it?

I have to assume you cannot put the smaller OEM (spare) tire on a front wheel (in 2wd/rwd) to limp home?

Measure the tire diameter (or get it off thier website) of the new tires you are getting and then buy a replacement spare of the same diameter and mount on your current spare tire rim. Does not have to be the same width just the height to be used for a temp spare.

Yes, I’ve gone the junkyard and picked up a steel spare as well as aluminum spare in the past and had the same OD tire size installed on it and put it in the spare tire location. You have to bend the exhaust heat shield a bit on the Ram diesel to fit a 35” OD tire. I was able to sqeeze a 315/70R17 on mine previously.
