Is the redline break-in additive needed? Would it help?

What do you guys think is the best oil for this engine? My BITOG search showed that renewable lubricants is favored by many for this engine. Is that the best choice? Any others that would work well?

Also, when is the ideal time for the first oil change?

Thanks in advance and all opinions welcome and appreciated!

These motors are fuel diluters of note, so although I agree with Steve S, I would be inclined to do a change in-between the recommended interval.
I changed mine at 1200km and am using Mobil 1 0w-40, I am going to change it to Liqui Moly (Lubro Moly in the US) Top Tech 4200 which is VW 504/507 spec.

i wouldnt use the break in additive...i would also use pennzoil syn or M1 in a vw turbo which are notorious pains in the [censored] for sludge if not maintained

I wouldn't use the additive. Just break it in with the factory fill for the first 1000 miles. After 600 miles, do some gradual run-up of the RPM until about 5000 and then let it engine brake back down. I changed my oil at 1500 miles. So far, I have very little oil consumption which is generally a problem in these engines.

I have been running the old maxlife synthetic 5w30 that was VW502. But these specs are no longer on the newer bottles. I plan on running Total Quartz 5w30 VW504/507 once my remaining stash of VW502 maxlife synthetic runs out.

Its a new car that I got with 12 miles on it so there shouldn't have been any "crazy rpm" test drives on it. It's a good chance to "break it in right", whatever that means ha ha

Is GC generally considered a good choice for this car? I know it meets the VW specs but is it either too thin or too thick to be "ideal"? I have lots of it from a sale a while ago but can use it in other cars.

Awesome info. on the break in procedure, Thanks!

VW engines can be quirky at times.

Check with VW, but with their engines it may be best to leave the factory fill in, unaltered except for top offs, until the first scheduled change interval (5k last I checked). After that, you can run whatever you want, provided it meets warranty specs.

From my limited research on the topic (including conversations with the VW techs), those who changed out to full synthetics too early were more prone to report increased consumption later. I consider additives such as the RL birds of a similar feather.

It's not 1955. Drive the vehicle normally. Modern mass-produced powertrains are nearly broken in before you take delivery.

There's also a great post on engine break-in by RI_RS4. I forget which thread it's in, but if you do a search, you might track it down.

I'm sure GC is fine. It may be thinner than the recommended 5w-40 but so long as its VW502, it'll be fine. In fact, I like running the thinnest VW502 oil possible because it's better for gas mileage.
