New Vehicle....When to Change to Aftermarket Fluids???

The engine and drive line make the most metal during break in. Does it matter? How long are you going to keep the vehicle? Will some one steal it or run into it totalling it ? Will the vehicle be a lemon and you end up keeping it for only 2 years before you get tired of it? I change my oils early but then I end up hating my self for spending the money to benefit the next owner.
Hoping to keep this vehicle for quite some time. 10+ years or so. I tend to drive about 25k miles per year. So as long as its not a lemon and it survives that long, figure upwards of 300k miles before I move on.

A long time ago I read a report that said something like 80% of the wear metals produced during the service life of a differential are in the first 15,000 miles. I think changing the gear lube at 15-25k and the transmission/tcase fluid at 50k is a good idea. A good compromise is due to one early change on all driveline fluids and just follow the recommended schedule after that.

The main benefit from the early service is removing the break-in metals, not the opportunity to switch to a non-OEM fluid.

Some would say the trip off the assembly line to the parking lot produces the majority of the break-in metals.

if you’ve ever disassembled a fairly new engine, you’ll likely note near zero wear. Even if the oil was original. Wear happens over time at a fairly predictable rate.

I always change lawn equipment oil after a few hours. However it’s no problem to go a Couple thousand miles on the original oil
