New vehicle has 5 engine idle hours

From what I've read, idling is bad for these new modern Diesel's. Because they regurgitate their exhaust, and that can cause the cats to clog.

Which in turn can lead to costly clean out procedures. Mainly because the exhaust gas temperature doesn't get high enough while idling. And all that soot has to go somewhere if it's not getting burned off inside the cats.

Agreed that sometimes more info is not better.

I would still do some decent engine braking sessions, some high-ish rpms, to break it in, get the rings to seal well.

My Wife was giving it the business during the test drive to see if it had any power. Towing our boat will probably be pretty rough on it but it will be a while before it sees the boat ramp and saltwater. Ram does that duty.

Would have been smart of the salesman to cool it down for when we arrived via appointment. I was worried it didn't have the greatest HVAC system but seems to be doing fine. Thank the Lord She didn't want a black vehicle.

The VW app for my GTI and Tiguan shows idle time as anything under two mph. My morning trip to get coffee this morning shows ten percent idle time for the trip and the drive thru was not that busy.

My new 6.2L Tahoe had the same idle hours when I took delivery.

I worked in sales at a Ford dealer around 2001. My first day was on 9/11. We were told to go out and start all the vehicles pretty much every day.

5 hours of idle is about 100 miles on the road in town. I wouldn’t worry about it.

i doubt its a big deal. My truck has 255k miles. 8000+ hours and 2500+ idle hours.

Five hours idle time is a tiny blip on the life of that engine. I rise at 0700, sometimes idle five hours 'till 1200. Still rollin' the odometer of life after 8 decades.

Mileage matters more than time.

Probably good for break in, I wouldn't expect anything less, in the northern States during snowstorms and lot snow cleaning, the vehicles get alot more idle time than that. Next time, check before you buy, too late to complain about nothing this time.

Manual calls for 0W-20, oddly enough. It does not mention any alternates if it can't be found or if temps are extreme like most manuals I've seen.

Right but I need to provide receipts for 0W-20 to keep the warranty bozos happy. Probably going to get a 96 month, 80k mile GM extended warranty. For ~$2800, I think it will pay for itself. This truck has a giant center screen for all of the controls. I don't have a whole lot of faith in that especially with how hot it gets here. Electronics aside, there is also the AFM/DFM lifter concern.

Your sig says you are using 5W-20 in the 2015 RAM though? Just trying to marry your comment about a "decent sized V8" with what you are running

Again, that's what the warranty requires. I have a lifetime warranty. A "guy I know" uses 5 quarts of 5W-20 in his Ram for the receipts and sneaks in 2 quarts of 10W-30.

I'd use 0w20 over 5w20 every day, all day long. 0w20 is a lot stouter oil than 5w20.
