Question, I Have a new 2011 Silverado Ext,4X4, 5.3, 6 speed Trans, tow pkg. When would be the best time for first oil change. Right now I have 3,000 miles on it and I tow a 6,000 lb. camper about once a month during warm weather. I don't want to wait for the oil life light to come on for the first oil change. I plan on using Mobil 1 or Amsoil for my all oil changes.

I would change it out now. Before going to synthetic though you give your driving habits. Mostly HWY or City driving etc?

GM's OLM monitor is very good, the best time to change it is when it tells you too.

The OLM will take into account your towing and reduce the oil life faster.

Change the oil now. Amsoil and Mobil 1 are great choices. The Pennzoil synthetics are also good picks.

I've used Quaker State Ultimate Durability, Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance in my new 2011. TheQuaker State Ultimate Durability ran the smoothest. Got combined MPG of 20 on both the Quaker State Ultimate Durability and Mobil 1. I went down to 18 on the Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

I'll be doing an oil change next week and I am going back to the Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

+1 on the Quaker State Ultimate Durability. My first change was with PP but decided to tryQuaker State Ultimate Durability on the 2nd change. Truck seems very smooth at idle with the Quaker State. Both meet the dexos spec for the OP's 2011 Silverado. (I have a 2011 Silverado too) Mobil 1 meets it as well. Don't think you'll go wrong with any of these, but with the $20 rebate available for signing up on the QS website and the AAP $3.99 quart special going on now, I definitely will be staying withQuaker State Ultimate Durability for the foreseeable future.

I believe that crankcase holds six quarts. If so, I would run the factory fill for 5K. Use Purolator filters. Personally, I run the Puro Classics for 5-6K... no issues.

Other fine oils to consider are Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra, Valvoline Synpower and Castrol Edge.

Funny how people will change their oil as they please regardless of what the OLM says. Their prerogative though.

1st Oil Change at 3k is very good to do.

Say, do you have the Transmission Temp Gauge on yours? If not, you may want to consider.

I waited until my OLM told me to do so. That was 6K so for the factory oil they put in my 5.3 Chevy engine that was good enough for me. After than I use Mobil 1 all the way.
