I run QuackerState 0w20 in my 2010 Tundra I do 5,000 mile or 6 month intervals.. I doubt my truck will have oil related issues some people drool over toyota oil..

Sounds as if I can get screwed at the dealership for a bulk oil change when i can do a synthetic myself for about 30 bucks. Ive decided it will have either M1 0w30 or a 5w30. As for the 2005-06 2tr engine called for 5w30.

Man, you are supposed to change oil every 6 or 12 months per the warranty requirements (depends whether 0W20 or 5W20 is required). Change it ASAP or your warranty is history.

I cannot see how they can make you run a synthetic oil.

The manufacturer can't make you do anything at all.
What they can do, is say that in order to keep your warranty, you must meet an engine oil that meets their requirements, and then give you a schedule of when you should change that oil.

If you care about the warranty, then you should change the oil at the intervals that Toyota recommends, using the oil specs that Toyota recommends.

If you don't care about the Toyota warranty, and would be willing to replace the engine out of your own pocket if it fails during the warranty period, then you can do whatever you would like.

Most people, however, tend to care about the warranty, so usually follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

So anyone got any input on what I should do for oil weight and OCI?

Follow the owners manual.
If it recommends synthetic 0W-20, use it.
Change it when they tell you to change it, and keep the records. Once the powertrain warranty expires, then you can do whatever you want.

BC.

Toyota is a great car. I never have to take it to the dealer for any problems.

Just change the oil, rotate tires, air filter.. @155,000 miles I do timing belt, transmission oil, so on.

The best reliable car.

You are the first poster I've seen saying to take a conventional to 10,000 miles.

Camplaining about paying $6 or $7 a quart for synthetic oil that goes twice as long as regular oil is about as absurd as complaining about having to put premium gas in your new Mercedes.

Deal with it. Cars in Europe have been spec'd for sythetic oil for years. Anyone that uses anything but factory spec oil during the warranty period in displaying poor judgement.

and see my post #45. Although it relates to 2012 Camry, .... same logic applies.

OT-Yea they can screw that up. Just make sure you mark the tires if you bring it in for a rotation, its an easy way to check that it was done. I had a dealer offering an $8 tire rotation once. I went in for warranty work and told them to rotate the tires for $8, they swore they did, but didn't. When I showed the mgr I marked the tires he was PIZT and offered to do it while I waited. I told him to zero out the invoice, and congratulated him on the fine job he did costing the dealership a repeat customer. I told the GM of the dealership the same thing. Two months later I bought another Ford from their competition.

I just got a new Toyota, as well. A Prius C. It also has the free 10k mile oil changes. I expect it's a great selling point for those that can't/won't do their own oil changes, but I'm not one of those people.

I've done the 1500 mile and 5000 mile oil changes, and will do 5k mile changes until the numbers even out. Then I'll start with 7500 mile changes to see what they're like. I've had trucks, too, and still do. I haven't done them any differently. Change regularly, with a good quality oil, at reasonable intervals. What more can anyone do?

I'm using 0w-20 M1 right now, haven't decided whether to stay with it or go with the PP 5w-20. I have used PP for a number of years in all the vehicles, but can't find it in the 0w-20 around here.

As for synthetic...define synthetic. How does Toyota define synthetic. If it says it on the label then it's synthetic. Remember, anything in an owner's manual is "recommended."

The big thing on the C section of PriusChat is the "0w-20 or your car will scream and die" people and the people who see it a little differently. The same car, same engine in Singapore shows the all-clear for 0w-20, 5w-20, 5w-30, 10w-30, 15w-40, and 20w-50. In SL, SM, or SN. When that came to light the 0w-20! people quieted down considerably.

I know some people are stubborn at times, but to complain about the oil you get for free at dealers intervals when you could easily do it right by doing it yourself seems a bit silly. It's just oil changes. And I can't imagine you'll void warranty by using something that is authorized and doing it at shorter intervals that "recommended."

Keep your receipts and keep records. If anything happens you'll have to fight it no matter what.
