Got a 2006 XC90 2.5T AWD w/36k on monday. There is some varnish on the dipstick and oil filler cap, no signs of sludge. Is it worth doing a basic application or just go straight to a maintenance dose to clean up the varnish?

It is obvious which product.

Oops, forgot to say AutoRx.

varnish is not unusual. i found just switching to a good syn oil and reasonable OCI's cleaned that up.

My engine must be worse on oil than I thought b/c I've never had a synth clean up varnish.

I dunno, I'd think it kinda odd to have varnish on a car with just 36k miles.

I think it may depend more on interval, temp, and type of oil than total mileage. I first noticed it in one of my engines at just less than 50K (the time of purchase) so it may have been there longer.

If it makes you happy go for it. Other wise if you just did the maintenance does with Syn oil I think you would have it covered.
