Guy ran a stop sign and hit our 2008 Accord 188k miles. Totaled. Haggled $7750 out of the insurance company. Thread here . https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/you-think-this-will-be-totaled.361308/

I picked up a 2014 Honda Pilot EXL, 4wd, 88500miles , new Michelin defender tires, compustar remote start, Rosen dvd players in headrests, very minimal rust underneath considering MN vehicle, private party sale $15,600

We have a 2012 Odyssey so I am pretty comfortable with typical Honda V6 issues

Game plan.

New engine air filter
New cabin air filter.
I don't feel any VCM vibes/issues but I ordered an SVCM muzzler regardless.

changed transfer case fluid with Valvoline 75w90, old had a slight brown tint, not horrible.

Rear diff had a slight/brief vibration when starting from a stop while turning but not going straight, this was solved with a drain and fill of Honda VTM4 fluid, Menards performax $5.99 pump worked great, minimal stuff on magnet. Fluid was a dark brown but still clear.

timing belt/WP. Ordered aisin kit from rockauto. Bando Sept belt and new OEM NGK plugs and Honda coolant. Was hoping I could put this off since it's in the 30's ❄🥶 already but I hear the typical chatter/rattle/dieseling sound of the timing belt tensioner when started cold, hopefully will tackle this weekend.

VTEC spool valve leaking. Ordered Amazon gaskets.
Trans fluid smells strong and very clear so I may leave until spring.
Spare is ANCIENT horrible I should replace tire and rim.

Nice! I have replaced the spool valve gaskets on 3 different 2011-2012 Odyssey's and they all gave me issues afterwards. I have no idea why? I ended up replacing the nearly $200 spool valve with a Honda unit and that fixed it. So dumb Honda doesn't sell the gasket separately on these...

Like you replaced the top end of the spool valve with the new OEM or just used the OEM gaskets out of the new part?
Replacing the lower half is a big job.

apparently Mahle part # B33566 is the LOWER gasket with screen and B33567 the UPPER gasket without screen, available at Oreilly "made in Japan" 🤔 so like $43 total for both
or
amazon gaskets in fake OEM packaging for $10?

Very nice car that can’t be a MN vehicle originally!

I’m not a fan of the Defenders in the snow. They are really good in other environments. I have a set on my 95 Wrangler that came on it, and since I’m very cheap, haven’t been changed. I’ve gone some amazing places on those tires, but they won’t move well in snow at all….we had a minivan with them as well, and I removed them after the first snow.

Maybe new makes a difference. Nice car though!

No way that thing has lived here it's whole life. Seems to have no added undercoating and NOTHING stays that clean bathed in salt half the year. Nice buy.

I'm not trying to go against your advice but I already had the gaskets and parts off.

I got it all back together.

New mahle gaskets fit well.
Lubed with a finger smear of oil on new gaskets.
Lower gasket needed a very slight amount of coaxing into place around strainer.
After holding it there for a minute it stayed in correct position for install.

Leak seems to be gone now now after driving around the block.

Does the valve always have oil flowing through it? Or only when VTEC engages?

Some sediment in strainer and lower middle channel. Guy must have been running Wix XP rock catchers before I got it. 🤣
