That is a great question. Maxima.org would likely be the place to ask. 02/03 are commonly pointed out, beyond those years, I am not terribly sure.

Both the vq35De non-revup and the vq35De revup have had oil consumption issues primarily due to piston ring issues (probably being slightly undersized). Nissan was replacing engines due to the oil consumption, so long as you reported the issue within warranty. But these engines also have a lot of blow-by. Some of my friends get more than one tbs of oil in their oil catch can everyday. Also, the valve covers have an inferior design. The gaskets around the spark plug tubes tend to leak oil. And unfortunately these gaskets are integrated into the valve cover, so the only way to fix the issue was to replace the entire valve. Luckily there are two companies now that have figured out how to refurbish the valve covers with better spark plug tube gaskets.

I've got a 2004 Nissan Altima with the VQ35DE, and it burns max of about 1/4 qt in 5000 miles. Only has 41K miles on it, and has been will cared for. Usually run the Purolator Classic or PureOne 14610 or 14459 with Mobil Clean 5000 5w30 oil.
