New tires or not

My '15 lmpreza has 23k miles on the original tires that have never been rotated. The rear tires have slightly more tread than the front. They have started to slip when accelerating and making a turn from a stop in wet road conditions. I noticed it for the first time this week.

Should l rotate or just buy good aftermarket tires? The OEM tires don't get good reviews. I could probably get 15k more miles out of them, but I don't particularly enjoy slippery tires in wet conditions.

Rotate. I bet it's not the tires but that you're more into the throttle now.

Whats your goal? Most enjoyment and performance? Maximal frugality? Somewhere in between? Also, how much tread is left and have you worn past any partial-depth siping?

My daughter's '15 Impreza had the OEM tires on for about two days after purchase before it had RT43s mounted on it.
If you have the same S33Bs (or something like that), I predict that you will be amazed by the improvement if you put decent tires on your car.

Obviously new tires would be slightly safer. If the toe of the front tires isn't less than 2/32 or so I would rotate anyway, but I am cheap. Although I see you are in NJ, so maybe a set of winter tires now and rotate these when you put them back on for april to get another summer out of them.

Don't all Subarus require rotation to keep the tires within 3/32nd ( I think) as to not affect the AWD system?

I would try rotate them first to see if the traction is better and more balanced. Plus, rotating is free. If you still don't like it, get new tires.

You're in New Jersey.

Just because your car says Subaru on the back doesn't mean it can turn or stop any faster in the snow than a 1988 Plymouth Voyager minivan.

If you already have snow tires to swap out for the winter then keep these for the summer.

How much snow do you get in NJ? My assumption is not enough for ded winters. Id measure your tread depth on all 4 tires first. That will give you your answer. If your back 2 tires are finished buy a new set. Go and buy a little tool to measure tread depth.

Driving on snow isnt the problem, its ice.

I don't know what came on the car, but I doubt those could hardly be considered an upgrade. They're an ok tire. I bought a set based on all of the great buzz here. Its just buzz, they're an ok cheap tire. I can't imagine buying a new car and tossing off good tires for these. Just light your money on fire along with the two day old tires.

+1 What do you want from this? Ultimately you are going to need 4 new tires. Either buy them now or rotate the front to back until the fronts are run down and replace all four. Ultimately you are replacing four tires.

Thanks for the feedback. I will rotate them this weekend and monitor performance. I work from home during snowy weather and generally avoid the roads until plowed so l really don't need dedicated snow tires for the relatively little snow we get here.
