New Stihl Gas Lawn Mowers

Stihl is German, Germans like to reinvent the wheel and coming out with a new line of gas mowers gave them a green light to do so.
The number of decent gas mowers has seemed to shrink so I applaud Stihl for coming to the market.

Spoke of it before, my dad bought a Toro Super Recycler with electric start about two years ago with the 190CC B&S engine. It does a fantastic job.
I had one of the older models of Super Recycler and I loved that thing. Best push mower on the market imo. I now use a zero turn because I have a much larger yard, but if I was getting a push mower it would be another Super Recycler.

I'm still in the market for a trim mower.. 2 laps around house, around the trees, out by curb, shed etc... ie 15min or so.
also got abit of a V hill between houses.. 50" deck on the tractor is abit big for it.

How "new" is new? These units have been available for some months at places like AcmeTool. Just me maybe, but the single sided handle is the answer to a question nobody ever asked. Pass on that.

I have all kinds of Stihl gas powered equipment, but no mower.
A friend of mine has a mower and he loves it. Here is a picture he sent me June 20, 2024, so he's had it one year.

I just bought a Makita XGT push mower from Home Depot yesterday. It was a no-brainer since I already have a lot of XGT batteries. My use case is similar to what @Rand was describing. I debated between the two Stihl mowers priced at $600 and $999, as well as Toro, Cub Cadet, and others. In the end, I didn’t want another crappy gas mower that I could never get to work right after two years.

The dealbreaker for me on the Stihl model priced at $619 from Ace Hardware was the polymer deck and the Lincon engine. The polymer deck might be great, but even the store demo unit had scratches on it, and it didn’t seem as durable as the aluminum or steel decks.

Maybe its just me but I don't see the handle as being vary stable especially when your start torquing and twisting the mower .

The new common Briggs & Stratton mower engines I'm seeing looks like cheap junk.

This is a Chinese engine on a TroyBilt at Walmart. Metal carb with a drain plug on the fuel bowl, quality fasteners all over, actual drain plug: I can forgive the dumb location as it least it has one. I would elevate the mower, tip and use a cut section of a plastic gutter to a drain pan.

Chinese company Loncin manufactures the HF Predator engines and Northern Tools engines as well as some engine models for Toro/Exmark, Gravely, Encore, Kärcher, BMW Motorrad, Husqvarna, and believe it or not... Honda.
I'm pretty certain that Gravely has dropped Loncin. The new ones at our shop are Kawasaki or Kohler.

I have never even seen a small Kohler
The small Kohlers at least used to be rather blatant Honda clones. This was at least 10 years ago though (Husqvarna 22 inch mower).

I too really don't see the point of these Stihl mowers. Four figure price tag and it doesn't even have a blade clutch? The one-sided handle does look useful to be folded up quickly to reduce parking space.

Yeah, stick with chainsaws !

They seem to have a model with a blade brake clutch. RM 655 VS. Kohler HD series engine, which has an iron liner. Seems nice enough.

The single side handle is dumb as can be. This mower is fine for a flat yard but try mowing a slope. It will handle differently going right or left because of that single handle. Dumb.

Agree. You’ll note that the Chinese copy Honda designs primarily. Not too many Chiggs and Strattons .

My thoughts exactly: The Toro is the way to go and not that darned expensive. I changed to a Toro Zero turn Time Saver when I got old and lazy. :)
