93 civic, someone jacked my stereo last year so i finally got a new one and got a scosche harness from walmart and wired it to the stereo wire for wire and triple checked everything, everything works stereo wise...balance,fader etc all speakers respond accordingly etc... only problem is the little wheel for the light that illuminates the speedometer, fuel etc does not work at all now, this has got to be something simple im a retard...

there was a wire on the new harness for "illumination/dimmer" it was orange but the box said that if your radio does not have a dimmer wire to just snip the end so it does not contact anything, and i did since my stereo didn't have a dimmer feature... hmmm...
If you just snipped the end it's possible that it's grounding out somewhere. I've had that happen before. You really need to cover it with tape or something. It's amazing how that tiny bit of copper at the end of the wire can find something metal to touch..but it does.
hmmm will go out and check fuses and all and try the dimmer wire to the 12 v.... the weird thing is when i plugged the harness in and turned the key on everything worked fine (didnt check dash panel dimmer) then when i pushed it into the sleeve i saw some sparking when the stereo's metal housing touched the metal sleeve, i thought it was a bit odd... it keeps presets and stuff, kind of irritating
Is the problem that the dash lights don't come on at all or is it that they're stuck on full brightness?
no it was just the speedometer/fuel gauge lights....the white light that illuminates that stuff at night, theres a little dimmer wheel you use to adjust the brightness and it just wouldnt work at all after the install... but every other dummy light came on, CEL, SRS, Brake etc.... checked the fuse panel and a 10 amp one was blown, went to AZ and got 5 new ones for $2 and threw one in and that did it i think, too bright outside to tell for sure but i think i saw a little light coming from it.... thanks guys
Be glad you used a harness. There's a lot of people who don't, who end up connecting the dashboard illumination wire to the ground on the new stereo because the dashboard illumination wire measued 0 ohms to ground. (Cold lightbulb filaments have a very low resistance).
The end result of this is that the stereo works, (even if it's a poor ground it can also ground through the antenna wire) but the fuse for the dashboard illumination blows everytime the lights are turned on.

also on my old stereo (sony mp3) i would hear that sound from the engine when the rpm's got higher, it would come through the speakers, not on this one....strange... i think theres some resistor soldering trick to get rid of that one.
It depends on how it's wired. I think Hondas might have the dimmer between ground and the dash bulbs, which means that feeding 12V into that wire won't do anything except maybe fry the dimmer.
