After checking out a co-worker's XD-S in .45ACP, I chose the PPS in .40s&w.
XDS was thicker, PPS is ultra slim and has two size backstraps included to help fit it to your hand.
Recoil with my PPS .40 feels feels about the same as with my Glock 21sf but is kind of sharper if that makes sense.
With the larger backstrap installed and the 7 rd mag that has the pinky grip, I felt like the PPS is better planted in my hand than the XD-S... it just feels very natural. My glove size is XL yet even with the 6 rd mag my pinky still is in decent contact, but admittedly I prefer the extra length of the 7 rd mag.
There has been some controversy about the removable backstrap of the PPS because of what Walther calls "QuickSafe." Which means with the backstrap removed the pistol is decocked and cannot fire. There have been two concerns, both of which I see as unfounded after examining mine. The backstrap features a prong that pokes into the grip and enables cocking. With the prong out (backstrap removed) the gun is disabled. What if the prong breaks off when you're changing out backstraps? Backstrap swap is very smooth and easy, it is goof proof in my opinion as long as you line-up the two guide marks. The prong seems stout as well. What if you drop the gun in a defensive situation and backstrap pops off, your gun is done when you need it most? Walther thought of this, and the backstrap is locked in to prevent this, but some guys get a [rubber] grip wrap and put it on as extra insurance. I've read that a cut piece of bicycle inner tube works the same for less $$, but I've concluded that both are unnecessary for me after examining the way the backstrap secures. The manual says to remove the backstrap every time you field strip for cleaning. I don't do that because I do the proper checks for a safe gun before stripping. The PPS field strips same way as a Glock and strips normally with the backstrap either on or off.
Rumor on Waltherforums is that they may be going to change the PPS over to a thumb press for mag release soon and that is why some of the closeout pricing is being seen on the current model.
I find the trigger guard mag release very intuitive, and actually like it. I am trained-in on Glocks, but when I'm shooting the PPS so far I haven't thumbed for the non-existent thumb release in a tac load drill.
Thanks! I'm leaning toward the PPS. Now I have to decide if I want it in 9mm or .40 LGS has one of each. My other carry gun is a 9mm.
I've never shot a .40 that is one of the few caliber a haven't ever shot or owned. Do you prefer your .40 PPS over the 9 PPS? Also if I may ask what would you consider a fair cash price? LGS is $549 another one 30mins away is $519 and one 45 mins away is $499. These prices are plus tax.
I don't generally barter on guns, but I may try to get the LGS to match or at least get very close. Thoughts on pricing?
