I called the Purolator filter hotline a few days ago (12/2005) and found they have new test data for the Pure One Oil filter verses when I called them about six months ago (6/2005). I did not ask why there is a change (new test method or new filter design).
Multi pass efficiency test (SAE J1858)
____________________10 micron_____15 micron_____20 micron_____30 micron_____40 micron
Pure One (12/2005)_____93.50%______99.60%______99.90%_______99.99%
Pure One (6/2005)______85%**_______96%________98%
Premium Plus (12/2005)__60%_____________________85%_________96%_________98%
Premium Plus (6/2005)___60%_____________________85%_________96%
(**Actually the old Pure One 10 micron rating of 85% for came from an old web page which Purolator no longer displays).
Note: I also have some old Pure One filters still in the box which advertise an efficiency of only 96%. Copywrite on box is dated 1996. Newer boxes Copywrited 2002 and 2004 both list a filtering efficiency of 98%. I wonder if even newer boxes will reflect the new higher efficiency data given over the phone.
Regarding the Premium Plus filters, the (12/2005) info is same as (6/2005) with the additon of the 40 micron rating.
Regarding Valvoline Maxlife; They would not give micron ratings, but said Maxlife is "High Capacity - Low Efficiency" verses the Pure One and Premium Plus which are "High Efficiency - Low Capacity" filters. They confirmed that the Maxlife is even less efficient than the Premium Plus filter, but Maxlife is designed to "remove more sludge" (as is advertised on the box).
They would not give me efficiency on the Motorcraft Filter due to their proprietary agreement with Motorcraft.
Originally I was hoping the Maxlife VF8A filter was essentially a Pure One PL30001 with a threaded end bypass valve.
So, I opened up a new Maxlife filter to see if the media was Pure One or Premium Plus.
Visual inspection indicated the media was of similar thickness to the P1 but color was somewhat whiter near the inner area of the pleats. (The P1 element color is amber throughout.)
I then called Purolator to ask them and recieved the info listed above. I could have called them first and saved $6. Live and hopefully learn.
FYI: Here are the measurements for the Maxlife filter I cut open:
Filter: VF8A
Pleat Depth: 0.75"
Number of pleats: 68
Pleat Width: 3.75"
Bypass Location: Threaded end
This appears to have even more pleats and filter area than the Pure One ( virgin filter info ). Too bad it doesn't have the same filtering media.
I'll stick with the Pure One for now.
