New Project - More Makita!

Wife unit undertaking a new accent wall project decided to buy from a local guy with a mill and finish herself.

We needed new stuff - much higher volume than just a lone hand sander.
The old Ryobi hand Sander bascially took a dump, and we needed some sanding products to be able to do the job -

New XGT Belt sander
New XGT 6" orbital
New Battery Dust Vac (have a bit of buyers remorse/ dilemma here)

Of course the dust vac came with a "Free" Mitre saw so the gear purchase exploded.
Dust extraction was something only wimps cared about for most of my teens and 20's.
Being genx I probably inhaled a forests worth of dust as a kid so extraction has always been a luxury for me but what a cool setup with the blue tooth tools and dust vac sync's

This 40V stuff is legit more powerful than most corded pieces - I was happy with the 18 and the 18X2 but this stuff is next level.

I always wore the heavy duty dust masks as I always figured saw dust wasn't a good thing to breathe in. Looks like a nifty project.
 
Serious tools for serious work. I have several LXT (impacts, blower) and two XGT tools (chainsaw, hedge trimmer). The LXT tools get the job done fine, but you can tell the XGT is a real step up in power.

We always knew it wasn't great for us , but we didnt have the money for even the throw away cheapie masks - so I typically got handed a bandana by project manager or brought a couple myself depending on who I was working for or if I was doing myself and where.

It'll be pretty neat, the master accent wall is a horizontal theme, this will be vertical theme.

Here how the master ended up.

I didnt either I was 18 and 18x2 for years - until I needed a mower and the package deal was actually cheaper so I jumped across the battery chasm.

That's most peoples first quick glance impression and one of the first question I get on a tour. "Why do you have a refrigerator in your bedroom"

It's actually a Quovis SS cabinet I'm using as an armoire.
Quite the piece of work, very sturdy and beautifully constructed.

I have the matching SS dresser on the wall to the left of me, I'll try to dig a picture up or take one.

You mention buyers remorse. I was wondering about that. I can’t really justify battery for most of these items.

Vacuums and saws are durable equipment. My skil 77, as an example, or my mitre saw, or meile vacuum, all of which I bought back ca. 2006, are still perfect. But had I bought battery, they would be many generations obsolete.

I run festool for dust extraction, but I’m sure makita has a beautiful unit.

Maybe that’s a never again phenomena, but for stuff that has a high likelihood of being lifetime purchases for a casual user, I have a hard time selecting items that will self-expire because of power source. 110v will still be there long after battery x is long obsolete.

I have lots of cordless tools, but I wonder if that’s your issue?

Havent seen this particular outcome yet, but the last ones were pretty cool so I'm hopeful.

The buyers remorse was the vac isnt wet/dry.
If I moved to the wet dry vac the "free" batts and mitre saw deal went away.

Im about 95% battery now and in the environment I work in, it works way better for me or Id have to drag a genset and cords everywhere.
Dads got a workshop so corded makes tons of sense, but my projects are spread out all over.

I still have my mag 77 but it doest get used anymore. (are you going to sell it she asked? LOL!!!)
Does Miele Make a dust extractor? I have 2 housefuls of their stuff love the brand myself.

Yeah, certain use cases certainly drive batteries. I bought a makita 18vx2 saw myself for that reason.

Miele - no idea. Just an example of a high quality potentially lifetime purchase.

I run festool dust extractors. Corded. They run too long when doing many jobs to justify battery, and they’re synced, as the power passes through the one to kick on the other.

I have Milwaukee m12/18 vacs, but the runtime is pretty short even with the big extra capacity battery.

I love festool products, and bought my dad a Domino for his 80th so he could finish the cabinets inside his travel trailer. If I were a cabinet maker vs a general purpose guy I'd have more of it.

I don't have shop space at this house.
If I were just sticking to inside work Id do the same - just run my corded shop vac with a hepa bag in it.
I have to drag all my stuff outside to work on it here and being corded would just be a total pain.

With the two huge 8AH 40V batts I did get over an hour of runtime at like 6/8ths power out of this setup, and I have enough batteries for continuous work if that ends up being needed which the nature of what were doing wont as its going to be on and off with three belt changes on the big sander and 1-2 grit changes on the hand sander. The tiny capacity will be the biggest limitation vs. run time but that's the tradeoff for a small vac that stores easily.

Heres the opposite view of the "dresser".

As a side the clock on it might be one of the most efficient machines ever built by man.
Powered by temperature change, 1 degree of rise or fall can power the clock for 3 days.

Upstairs accent wall coming together. All the boards have been sanded smooth stained and sealed.

SUPER impressed with these XGT tools.
The sander and dust extractor both ran about 6 hours and the systems throughput and charging capability are top notch.
The AWS system worked like a champ.

IF I had to do it all over again I'd have started with a planer, that would have cut the overall sanding time dramatically, but Im an amateur and you live and learn.

What did you use on that wall? Turned out great. 👍

It’s much better than the “pallet art” wall the previous owners of our house put up. 😵‍💫
