New Prius...and free oil changes?

Saturday my wife and I purchased a new 2016 Prius for her to drive in her home health business. The car comes with free (5k oci) oil changes up to 25k miles with an unknown conventional oil. Here in lays my dilemma, should I have them do the OCIs free with non synthetic oil, or should I continue doing the oil changes like I always have with a quality synthetic? I am not concerned about the cost savings, as it is actually more convenient for her for me to do them at home anyway.

I know awhile back Ford had a "lube for life" promotion. In this, you could pay some extra fee for Synthetic changes (I think it was $20 or $30). You could try asking if you can pay a little bit to have the changes upgraded. I would probably look into that, it could be worth it especially since the car is new and in warranty.

Also, congrats on the car! I'm not familiar with the Prius lineup, but there is a brand new one at work that looks pretty cool.

Free oil changes aren't enough to get me to wait for them to be done at a dealer personally. Make sure you keep all the receipts. I know my Grandmother just got a 2015 CRV that comes with a "lifetime warranty" from the dealer. One of the stipulations is you can't change your own oil...

This is BITOG...prevailing attitudes are dealers are evil (with few exceptions). Personally, if you have the time and the dealer is given something for "free" I would take it. Whatever oil they are using will not blow up your motor.

I would be very surprised if the dealer wasn't using the Toyota brand 0W-20 for you oil changes which of course is a synthetic oil specifically designed for your car.
It's made available in bulk to all Toyota/Lexus dealers in North America and is the main oil used by Toyota/Lexus dealers in my area.

There were some unspecifics about your post.
Are you assuming it's an unknown conv. oil?
Do you know for sure, or is worded as an oil change that meets the requirements for your prius.

In summary, is the deal going to be for something that satisfies the recommended oil in the manual? Or is it deliberately worse and they will surcharge or upsell you to get what is recommended?

E.G. is the "free" is just 10w-30 or something like that when the cap says 0w-20?

I doubt they would put in the wrong oil as the dealer, but you wrote it as if that might be a possibility.

So assuming it's the right oil, but just bulk.

If I were in your shoes, biggest decision would be is it a hassle to go to the dealer?
Do they get you in and out quicky? Is it pleasant and you don't get a hard sell on other services?

The other thing is you can change your mind.
So perhaps you go once for the first change , and then you can decide based on your 5k experience if you go back or not at 10k and so on.

Sounds like you already know the answer.

+1 They are going to use whatever oil is speced for your vehicle which I believe has to be at least a blend 0w-20. I just got my terrain changed at the dealership for free and they used AC Delco synblend Dexos. Personally I would use the free oil changes. At least that way they can't void the warranty if the maintenance was done by the dealership.

+1

I often here of these "free" promotions offered with the purchase of a new car. Then I think of how many wasted hours I'd spend sitting around waiting for my car to be completed (sometimes a whole day is wasted in the dealership). Then comes the worry of if the job was done by a competent mechanic, or if the job was completed at all (considering the "free" work being completed).

OR I can use my mightyvac and change the oil and filter in less than 30 minutes and have the rest of the day to do whatever else I feel like.

Id change it myself. Nobody knows which nozzle of oil they're going to grab to fill it up, regardless of whether you pay for synthetic or not. They don't use bottles of oil in a dealership. They have multiple hoses that goes straight to barrels of oil and has a gauge that tells them how much oil is pumped in. I doubt the minimum wage lube monkey is going to make sure it's the exact specified oil and all that.

Oil is cheap and much more convenient to do yourself. Only takes me less than 15-20 minutes to change the oil in my car, including cleanup time. Takes a lot longer to drive to the dealership and wait around for an hour.

Exactly. I told my dealership to keep'em.

Let the dealer do the first one while you watch and then decide. If dealers don't let me watch or have the work place away where I can't observe, then I'd do it myself. Ed

The warranty will not be voided no matter who does the work if all is done properly.

If authorized dealers couldn't do simple oil changes what can they do ?

Authorized dealers service hundreds vehicles everyday, chance of anything goes wrong is very slim. I wouldn't worrying about simple oil change at authorized dealers.

My daughter 2014 Honda Accord had 4-5 free oil changes at dealer she bought her car from, nothing ever went wrong, they even washed her car after the free oil changes.

The only thing was they upsell few items, such as engine and cabin filter, tire balance/rotation ... which my daughter declined every time(I told her)

If you read and believe all the posts here on BITOG-99.9% of dealers are incompetent.

We bought 15 2015 Prius's last year to use for courier work. We get synthetic OC's from the dealer that average 10k OCI per the OCM.
Ask what the upcharge is for synthetic.
