New power steering pump issue

Good evening,

I had the power steering pump replaced as it needed to come off for the timing belt replacement.

I than bleed the system for 10 minutes, it didn't require more fluid and bubbles stopped coming up. The car was HOT at the time of me doing this.

The pump is silent until it's fully locked both ways, it releases a high pitch squeak. If I turn the steering wheel when NOT in motion, the wheel almost fights me and will pull back and forth, like the steering wheel has a mind of it's own.

Thoughts?

Positive. Google tells me that the highlander has a "bleed valve", however I cannot find it....

Where did you get the pump, what brand, new or reman. If its a Cardone reman, its toast right out of the box.

It's a new pump, not a reman from Advance Auto Parts....

It didn't give me any issue on jack stands. It only is jerky when NOT in motion, tires on the ground.

Sounds like there's air in it still. Idle it up on the ground and continue to cycle the wheel lock to lock. If that doesn't work, cycle the wheel lock to lock in the air engine off. Engine off may make a mess, but if there's air it should burp it up and out then you'll need to top it off. If those methods don't work idk. I have never heard of a bleed valve for anything but cooling systems or brakes but that's not to say there isn't one.

The squeak could be belt slip. Is it adjustable?

You should have resealed your old pump. If it's not OEM.....It's most likely of questionable quality!

A loud squeal at lock could be a loose belt, If you think there's air in it......Pulling a vacuum on the system is the best way.

Rubber backed aftermarket belts don't work particularly well on 1MZ/3MZ PS pumps.....They stretch way to easy. The Cloth backed OE belts made by Bando or Mitsuboshi are much better.

It sounds like it still has air in the system, you may need to bleed it with a hand held vacuum pump and a rubber stopper, do you have a hand held vac pump?

Cline had the same thought. I believe this is a Cordone select unit Made in China, anything Cardone is suspect, if bleeding it doesn't work you may have a dud and chances are good the next one will be the same. OE Toyota reseal kit is $50 and an easy job.

Well, I feel silly. I brought my wife outside to watch the resivor as I turned the wheel back and forth. Still have LOTS of air bubbles. We worked at it for 30 minutes and called it a night. Tomorrow we're going to keep at it. I'll report back. I had to move the car further inside the workshop and it already felt much better.....

when you do this you do it on jack stand(so you don't damage the new one?)

We are lucky to have a rebuilder in the San Jose, CA area.
Generally the best way to go if you have a couple days to wait.
I keep the core and have it rebuilt rather than turn it in.

I have replaced 1 or 2 PS pumps , way back when . I drove Fords and GMs . Never had that much trouble . Same when replacing PS hoses .

My wife and I took turns again this morning getting the air out of the power steering reservoir. I called a local shop to see how much they would want to put vacume to the system and pull the air out. The guy told me that my vehicle just needs to be driven and it would improve after a few hundred miles. As of now, it's very smooth unless I turn the tires when not in motion (but it's MUCH better than last night).
