New Mustang Shelby Oil?

My friend just bought himself a 2010 Shelby. Apparently, it's even better than the previous GT500 K/R - a supercharged 500+ hp monster.

He's wondering about what oil to use in the car and what break in interval to use. I believe the manual specifies 5w-40 but unlike the Corvette, I don't think there's a particular brand. I would guess that there is some Ford specific "XYZ" spec it has to meet but at this point we don't know. My friend is a loyal Mobil 1 user, but PP gets good reviews and Valvoline and a few others have made some aggressive marketing claims that they are better than M1.

Any thoughts?

The oil Ford sells exclusively for the Shelby is only rated as API-SM, no fancy Ford specific numbers.
If this is true then I would use Mobil 1 in it. API licensed, a great oil that will keep the engine spotless and provide great protection.

After the warranty I would run Amsoil in it!

If it is one of the big HP boys Ford calls for 5W050 with the following Ford spec WSS-M2C931-B.

Motorcraft makes one, Valvoline (Roush Oil) Pay that much for the car, use what Ford recommends and keep performance and warranty going.

anybody that would buy that car and run it out of spec and void the warranty deserves something special....

Like a stupid award. Oil's cheap. Blown Fords aren't.
 
Everyone always thinks they know more than the engineers with PHDs that designed the engine.

Considering that this is the only gas engine in the US that Ford doesn't recommend using a 20wt in, I would assume that there is a sound engineering logic behind the recommendation and not go against it.

Congrats to your friend on the Shelby. I drove a pre-production unit in May and all I was amazed that a car with 30,000+ miles of a lot of different people driving it, there were no squeaks or rattles and everything felt brand new.
 
Does the car come with an oil pressure/temp gauge?
What are the bearing clearances?

With the above info you'll be able to determine soon enough whether
a 40 or 50 wt oil is actually necessary the way he operates the car.
I suspect as with most high performance cars the oil is spec'd for anticipated track use. Oil temp's on the street will likely be modest and therefore a good syn 30 wt will be more than adequate; warranty requirements notwithstanding.

Just a side note ... the Vettes can use any oil brand that meets the spec (full synthetics) that GM calls for. It use to only be Mobil 1 that met the spec, but now there are many oil brands out there that meet the GM spec.

It's probably the same approach with the new 'Stang ... look for the Ford spec in the manual, and I wouldn't recommend deviating from it.
