New MotorCraft FL9 cut open

Like the AC Delco I just posted, this is used mostly on old Buick engines from like '68 to '87, I'm thinking that not much has changed in their design in decades other that maybe materials.

I had this on my shelf and won't be using them - and I just got this oil filter cutter, so...

MotorCraft FL9:

Can removed, showing the paper end caps, string, and steel spring. I counted 59 pleats, which is a couple more than the AC Delco - but they're not nearly as evenly spaced.

Here's where it got interesting - looking at the glue job on the end caps, there was this one spot that looked like the glue didn't stick very well. The cardboard end cap was bent around the edge a bit, all I did was unfold it - I didn't pick at it or try to tear anything apart.

It didn't take much effort at all on my part to bend the end cap away from the filter media, showing this faulty glue job. I'll grant that the glue is holding to the center section so that there's not a clear path for oil to bypass the media, but this doesn't look good to my eyes.

Do you think the age of the filter has anything to do with the glue losing it's hold?

That filter is probably from the early 90's. It has the Purolator string but the element looks like an old Fram...

Guess Fram used to use the string trick also.

That filter is old enough to vote.....
And by your pictures, that is one reason I won't run a filter that is exceptionally old, or has been stored in high heat or high humidity conditions.

It's not that old, at least it hasn't been on my shelf nearly that long. I picked this up from Rockauto.com just awhile back on a wholesaler close out.

Now, there's no telling how long it sat on 4 or 5 other people's shelves. Anybody know how to decode that production code on it? Maybe there's a date there...

That's exactly the wording, "Long Life Oil Filter," that I've been talking about for a couple years here. The FL1A used to be painted with that wording (just like the filter in the picture), whereas the CFL1 was the "normal" filter.
