So I applied to this company about 2 weeks ago and they called me 10 days ago for an interview. First interview went GREAT! They wanted to set up a second interview in two days, I went and that interview when great as well. Then 45 minutes later I get a call saying come in on two days and we will get you to fill out the hiring paperwork and get you work shirts and wanted to know if I could work 2-4 days starting the following week even though I wasn't scheduled until August 16th. I said Sure I can make that happen. I'm currently living over 3.5 hours away for the summer and would have driven 7 hours a day to secure this job. They knew I was living 3.5 hours away because one of the interviews asked me if I was planning on commuting. I told him no, I have an apartment and the lease there starts August 15th. He said oh ok..good.

I get a call from the guy about 2 hours later and he seemed REALLY REALLY nervious telling me that they hired someone about almost 3 weeks ago..sorry. So timeline indicates 3 DAYS BEFORE my first interview they already had someone hired. [censored]? Then he called back about 45 minutes later saying they have a different position open and asked if I would come in tomorrow to discuss it. I noticed the hours for that position would DIRECTLY interfere with my school schedule.
I'm wondering would I drive 7 hours tomorrow to tell him this or just email it to him?
I'm kinda angry right now over the hole thing

This is really flaky behavior on the employer's part.
From what I've read here and there, it's also becoming pretty common in the current employment market.
Unfortunately for job seekers, there are plenty of other folks out there for any given position, so employers are free to act unethically in hiring decisions.
Unless they found some show-stopper in your personal history, to have offered you a job and then withdrawn that offer is unethical.
These people made you an offer of employment and then hurriedly withdrew it with no good reason given to you.
Maybe not a company you'd want to work for?

+1. What they did is either unethical or shows that they do not have control over their own operations as the people doing the hiring don't even know when a position is filled. I would stay far away from such an outfit.

Mistakes happen. But my personal take on this situation is that you do not want to work for this company, I would politely email your contact with the company in question and let them know you decline the job offer in reference to the new position.

Call them directly and review the situation on the phone with the person directly responsible for the situation. That would be the best way to see if you can resolve the issue. Maybe the other hire can take the proposed shift. They may be motivated to work with you given how it seems they know they jerked you around.

Its worth a shot if you feel you want to take the effort.

What if that other employee does switch, I still would be working for a VERY poorly managed company. Not my cup of tea!

I thought you were going for your DPT. You wont have time for a job, and classes like the neuro series and the cadaver classes will require a lot of knowledge and memorization, so get studying.

There's your answer. Cut your loses and move on.

I have a few classes left.. like 4-5 total. I'm just 14 hours away from my degree. I don't have my parents to live on like a lot of students at that college. I MAY talk to my scholarship advisor and see if I could get a little extra for living expenses too. The company I worked for before down there, the managers would say EVERY day you went into work " we can fire you, you can be replaced" The manager was stealing large amounts of money and trying to pit employees against each other" the manger's dad came up to the place to ask him why HIS money was missing and on the building property they got into a very bloody fist fight with customers watching nonetheless. That is just how people operate down there. Had I known that when I chose to transfer my schooling there, I never would have set a foot in that town.

I have come this far, I WILL finish school even in such a dysfunctional town!

1) That place jerked you around. Don't waste your time or gas money traveling that far to decline the other job they supposedly have. I'd just email them and tell them you aren't interested, and I'd also include that part of the reason you aren't interested is because they jerked you around with the previous position.

2) Focus on school. Take out loans if you have to for living expenses. As a DPT you'll make good money, so it isn't a big deal to take out an extra $10k in loans for one year. Focus on school and finish. You may be able to get Stafford even and not have to go to private loans depending on your situation.
