New Jersey tells Tesla: remove super chargers from NJ Turnpike

Yes. It’ll charge two cars at the same time - shared, reduced power. Not exactly sure their method - seems different brands have different strategies.

They’re these ones.

I believe the Alpitronic HYC400s which are being installed everywhere can send 600A to two cars at the same time, which is awesome. They must turn down the voltage but keep up the amps when shared. Others might keep the voltage but turn down the amps when shared. Not totally sure 🤔

Im pretty sure these split power based on their website - these two points specifically make me believe that.

I certainly like the price they are charging.

  • Made in the USA (NEVI Compliant) or Made in Korea
  • Power Sharing between cables
  • Dual CCS1 Cable
  • 32” Wide Touch screen
  • Customizable messaging with the top LED Banner
  • OCPP v1.6J (ready for OCPP 2.0.1)
  • Modular Power
  • ADA compliant
  • CSA, UL, FCC, CTEP compliant (2023 Q4)
  • Customizable LED Lights
  • Active Power Sharing between the two dispensers

so switch to a charger that charges no cars?

Sure, if you see an empty cabinet when you pull up - pick that one.

Switching mid session is likely to take you backwards going through the move and the handshakes.
The handshake on these 3rd party chargers is typically a two part process - a handshake at the credit card process, and a handshake using your phone to initiate the session. A tesla car on a tesla supercharger is just plug in and walk away.

In reality only a few vehicles on the road today are going to pull huge numbers for more than 5-10 minutes before they start to dip.

This guy is a bit over the top, and I also think he's missing the bigger picture NJ didnt screw tesla owners, in typical NJ fashion - they screwed everyone

According to this guy these applegreeen chargers are pretty lame. Only 100KW between 2 cars so if both active 50 KW.

This is worse than 15 years ago.

(at least these ) arent nacs native, but have a nacs adapter which is pretty clumsy he couldn't get to work at all. The adapter at this location had a row of duct tape on it.

It seems they do show up as a destination apparently and the car will precondition when heading there, but they dont report status or price to the UI.

I think he said it was 62 or 64 cents per KWH at that so a rip off there as well.

Interesting as they will drive nacs and all those seeking fast charging cars away from their service to nearby higher speed options.

Kinda funny he did a video on the NJ turnpike but his prime example was an AppleGreen in Ardsley NEW YORK, that’s not on the NJ turnpike.

The closest NJTP location to him is the Vince Lombardi station. They have eight, 400kW chargers. 4 CCS 4 NACS and are 35¢/kWh.

And kind of ironically, the closest Tesla site to Ardsley is Tesla-Only (Dobbs Ferry). Locked out from every other type of EV.

This guy feels like a whiner to me.

What service are you using for the screenshot you posted?
Im finding all kinds of disparate data on that center.

I dont have a problem with non government funded chargers being locked to the person that paid for them.
I dont think it's good business, but the guys that write the checks should get to make the rules.

That’s the AppleGreen Electric app. Every NJTP charger is 35¢/kWh. Live status of every charger, live pricing, and you can setup Autocharge/Plug&Charge, so every EV works like a Tesla at a Supercharger site. Just plug in and it automatically starts charging.

If it's accurate thats pretty fair pricing for 400KW split.

Im trying to find it on abrp but I need to create a route through it
The area shows up, but It doenst list the charger on plugshare at the moment but cant spend lots of time this AM.
I may have a filter on Im not seeing

There is no lack of charging in that area for sure.
