So, my mom needed a new computer since hers was old as dirt.

She likes my iMac (all in one design) and decided she did not want a tower.

A quick trip to best buy and she picked this out:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP---20%22-Touch-Screen-TouchSmart-All-In-One-Computer---4GB-Memory---1TB-Hard-Drive/3425961.p?id=1218401490918&skuId=3425961

She is asking me about the specs and I tell her that for what she is going to do (internet) it is more than fine.

She gets it home. I set it up (plug it in

) and get through all the starter stuff.

Three things:

1. It has "Beats by dr.Dre" audio built ii. It really sounds BAD. I mean, stock laptops have better audio quality. And there is little volume to it. The loudest it gets is again, equal to a value laptop.

I have little experience with beats head phones, but the computer side of "beats" is a crummy marketing ploy and that's it.

2. It has a 20'' "touch screen". This, again, is a crummy marketing ploy. The "touch" is so bad. You tap the "close" you get minimize. Tap YES it thinks you hit NO. It's a "nice idea" feature that was not perfected but thrown together cheaply as a "o0o0o0o0o look, this one has a touch screen!!!" marketing gimmick. It comes with a wireless mouse and keyboard, which is good because the "touch screen" interface is beyond useless.

3. Windows comes with SOOOOO much extra stuff! The 1tb HD only has 886 GB available!!! As soon as you turn the thing on, it forces you to go through "start up" menus of offers from internet companies, HP support, HP accessories, Windows upgrades, Office, ect. . . . Then, you finally get through all that. Your ready to use the internet. You click the "e" and it takes 25 seconds to bring up the browser that ALLREADY has 6 add ons like search bars and internet security ads that YOU have to turn off.

Besides ALL OF THAT; the computer is ok. Solid for the price, acceptable features and specs.

On the price: It was marker $649 at Best Buy, but while there I did a quick search on my phone and found a current circular for Office Max that had it for $549.99. So, she got it for that price.

She is happy with it, so that's all that matters.

I would of rather gotten her a Mac mini, but she wanted a "all in one".

Make sure you make recovery CD's if when Windows bombs or the HD fails.

My friends father had an all-in-one HP. I liked it. (and it ran ubuntu great)

Good reminder! Thanks

Make sure she uninstalls all the [censored]/bloatware that comes with it.

or run PC Decrapifier. it's freeware and is pretty good too!

Remember, the price of the PC is low because all that bloat was put onto it as "advertising". As you remove it, things will speed up.

Yea, I know its cheap for a reason. I just don't like it! Im a Apple fanboy, so I admit I have a bias.

The HP works, and the reviews are good so, she should be set.

Best way to describe it is a land locked laptop. Or is it a smart monitor..

Personally I like the idea. Nice and clean, no wires, everything's right there. Many of my customers have HP's, a few have the all in ones. No big problems, just regular wear and tear. Try to get an Intel processor if you can, I cant remember the last time I replaced one.

We bought the same one 2 weeks ago -- except we bought ours at NFM, and it has 6GB ram. We love it. Of course comparing to our old Vista machine with only 1GB, anything would be better.

My clients love their HP business-class AiO models. The HP software overlay for the touch screen is pretty nifty too.

Around $875 if you look for a good deal (4GG RAM, 500GB disk, Win7Pro, etc). People don't want their small office space crowded with towers or even desktops anymore. Times are a changing.

+1

I love my iMac!

You're probably losing at least 100gb to formatting information ... that would explain the reason that the hard drive only has 886 gb free

Except that the AIO are a much poorer value than a traditional desktop model, and frankly there is no practical purpose for touch screens on desktop monitors unless you like gimmicks.

Poorer value? Maybe to you, but to the company that gets a new business class Intel i5-equipped computer with monitor, with 3yr warranty delivered for $900, that's very good value. After watching early 20-somethings take to the touch screen, like their phones, I have to disagree. Things are changing quicker than we think.

a 1tb hdd is 954GB, windows 7 is 20-25GB or so but add in hibernation file, page file, and tons of bloatware/adtrial whatever and I can see it being 75GB easily.

also it sounds like you need to calibrate the touchscreen.
I repair registers with these on them and they are nothing new.. should be easy fix.

Plus a recovery partition which can typically be 10-15 GB.

My iMac came with 989GB available with it's 1TB HD. . .

And the touch screen has been calibrated by me first, then by her.

It is just not done all that great. It's jittery and "buggy".

That's with OS installed on it? If is, the drive must have been larger than 1 TB in reality.

1TB is 1,024 GB; so I can see the OS occupying that amount "out of the box". 35GB for filesystem formatting and an OS sounds reasonable to me.
