In case you misunderstood my question, I don't think you'll find many sources (including the manual) that say it's important to use the OEM oil filter. The manual recommends it, not requires it. Now, I will agree you should use something of equal or greater quality. To say it's "very important" to use the OEM filter and nothing else is just silly.

I would just keep it in there for the recommended service and change it out once you hit it. As long as you aren't doing some extended OCI on factory fill, it'll be fine.

Simular situation. '12 civic si (k24) that I bought new. I have 8,000 miles on the original fill. Oil life indicator almost unbelievably says 40% oil life left. I had planned on changing at ~7500 but I'm questioning that decision. I drive mostly highway miles(75 a day), but I do regularly drive it like an Si. I have everything I need to change it (Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20, bosch filter). Engine has used a little over a half of a quart in said mileage, which is less than hi-po VTEC's I've owned previous to this. I plan on keeping the car a long time or at least putting a lot of miles on the car. I don't believe I've ever gone this long between oil changes on any vehicle I've owned, but am trying to follow the manual. Feeling kind of ansy. Any suggestions? Thanks!

How many months old is it?

I'd say you'd be good to change it soon because Honda recommends you leave in the factory fill for around 7500 miles aside from the OLM.

I bought it back in late September. I've been racking the miles up on it. I figured 7500 was a good number even vs the optimistic computer's figures. Looks like it will get changed right around 8000. Should I follow the computer's recommended intervals from here on out with synthetic (Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, or oem) and a quality filter (pure1, bosch, or oem)? Sure seems like a long time, but since I'm getting old and lazy I welcome it as long as I'm still going to get a fair amount of miles out of the car. Still a bit skeptical about 0w20 in this application, but I'll try new things.

5,000 miles or 15% on the oil life meter(by 7,500 miles at the latest).

That's my opinion. Probably the latter.

well we are here to educate other people. I learn new stuff everyday.

Are you willing to use fram extra guard on your 2010 toyota sienna?

Depending on how many miles you put on your car I would recommend following the OLM, in any case I wouldn't let any oil in the car for more than 18 months including synthetic.

If you are going with a FULL synthetic I would go at least 7500 miles depending on time, perhaps 9500 miles if you rack up that amount in less than 18 months time, especially if they are highway miles and few short trips are involved.

Hardly no stop & go in that 75 mile commute? If so, then run that oil for 10k. It may read 20-25% then.... .. almost perfect.

Now I feel better. My oil is 13 months old. Oil meter show 40% left.

I just gonna drive and not pass 18 months on oil.

Its a pretty nice drive, four stop signs and a light. Most of it is 55 mph. I cover ~30 miles in ~30 minutes. Far from what I would consider stop and go. I figure that's why the oil indicator is being so optimistic. I rarely have any drive that is less than 10 minutes since I live in a rural area. A lot of the other miles are highway going between 60 to 75 for at least 30 miles. I'll run it a little further or until it gets pretty low on the dipstick.

I thought the owner's manual states that the oil should be changed when the oil life monitor reaches 15% or 1 year, whichever comes first.

That is what the dealer told me, I believe they said that's what the manual says. That's for my '11 Civic.

For some reason, some people think they know more about their car than the people who designed it, and opt for changing the Factory Fill before instructed to do so. They're probably the same ones that will refill ANY new car with 10w30 because their grandfather told them it's the best.

Drew2000 is right. Change it early, leave it in.... I think Honda FF is Mobil 1.

MajorCalvary: Honda say follow the MM and change oil every 12 months. At that point, I am not going to follow the MM. I don't drive too many miles this winter. So I will leave the oil up to 16 months. I don't care about the warranty and stuff....

People here on BITOG are way too anal about leaving the oil in a vehicle for more than a year no matter what, even if it is completely reasonable and acceptable to do so.

As long as the car is not being constantly driven in a serve service mode (short trips, stop n go, ect) for most of the time there is NO reason you cannot leave the a quality oil in a car for about 18 months.
