I just installed a remote start on my new Honda Pilot that I purchased in June. The SUV only has 2700 original miles on it and is only at 70% Oil Life remaining through this winter so far. I ran into problems programming the remote start and had wound up test starting it approx 15 times or so in all. Do the experts think I should change this facotry fill now and ignore Honda's warning not to change the facotry fill early? I am obviously worried about fuel dillution with all these starts along with winter idle time. I have Redline 0W20 waiting to go in and compliment factory fill. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Take it out on a long trip(s) and that should burn off the fuel dilution.

As far as changing the oil, there's lots of viewpoints on that one... "If it were mine" I would get the metal soup out of there, especially if I planned on keeping it for a very long time. I'll keep out of that debate though...

No expert here, but I'm 100% in agreement.

Best way to breakin a new vehicle - drive it the way you plan to use it. From day 1. Same goes for oil changes. The answer your looking for is no it does not matter. change it or leave it wont make a difference. If your itchin scratch it

Honda/Acura...go by the OLM (15%) or 1 year on the factory fill. We own both and did it this way. Usually Honda dealers stress leaving the factory fill in until about 15%.

I would wait for the magical 15%

This is the only company that explicitly mentions the break-in additives that they put in for the owner... Keep it.

On my 05 Civic I changed the factory fill at 5,000 miles like the book said. 78,000 miles plus and I dont have to add any oil between a 5,000 OCH.
I have an 03 CRV that was bought with 30,000 miles on it that uses a quart between changes at 103,000 miles. I have no idea what was done to it before i got it.

This.

The engineers that built your engine instruct the owner to keep the factory fill in until about 7500 miles.

Personally I'd listen to Honda over some random people posting here in the internetz!

Change when the OLM reaches 20%. At your rate, that might take 15-18 months. Don't sweat all those months. The factory puts in extra additives to the factory fill, so the oil remains strong. It may not reach 20% until 8-9K.

Q: My Honda is equipped with break-in oil, should I change it early?

A: No. To ensure proper engine break-in, the factory-fill engine oil needs to remain in the engine until the first scheduled maintenance interval.

The factory fill oil is the same as Honda Service Replacement Oil. The difference is the Molybdenum lubricant that is applied to specific internal engine components.

Sorry for the duplicate post.

I agree with oiltard and tpitcher, but, at the end of the day, it will be your decision. For what it’s worth, I have 190,000 miles on a Honda Accord V6 and I changed the factory fill at 500 miles. I did a number of used oil analysis that made me a believer in getting the manufacturing residue out asap. I suspect that either way, you’ll probably never know the difference.

I recommend synthetic blend or synthetic. The Honda OEM Oil filter can go about 10,000 miles. Conventional oil about 5,000 miles. you don't want to waste the oil filter since oil will last 7,000 to 10,000 miles.

syn blend and synthetic is best way to go along with oem oil filter.

People always have assumed that the reason Honda wants you to keep the factory fill oil in for the duration of a full OCI is to increase engine life but there is more to it than engine life. We all know that the factory fill oil is loaded with moly and one of the actions of moly is to decrease friction and therefore heat. By doing this, it helps seat rings better because the pistons are gliding more efforlessly and hence seating the rings in a truer sense. This will lead to less oil loss and less top ups. Moly is also good at dulling or polishing metal thus leading to less scuffing and a truer glove to hand fit with engine parts especially pistons and bearings. I have had a long long discussion with a Honda engineer about this issue and the above is how he explained it. He even said that by decreasing friction, it is beneficial for seals which at the beginning of their life are a little more rigid and need to be broken in, by reducing heat/friction, you reduce the chance of "micro fractures" in the seals as well.

I would leave it in at least 5000 miles. Then you are fine to drain it. Before the OLMs were put in cars Honda said 5000 was good.

Metal soup this, break-in oil that...

READ THE OWNERS MANUAL & FOLLOW IT.

END OF DISCUSSION, THE INTERNET IS NEVER RIGHT...usually

Just wanted to share my own experience with OEM filters... I've used an OEM on my 07 Civic since it was brand new, changed every 5k miles with M1. The oil was always pretty black on the dipstick at 5k miles. No, that's not why I changed it, just my oil OCD. Anyway, I used a PureONE filter this past time, and at 5k the oil barely looked used on the dipstick. My opinion is, yes the OEM filter might be a great filter, but the PureONE has proved to be much better. At least when it comes to color

It is very important that you use Honda OEM oil filter. ( the blue one ). I heard 15400-plm-a01 is better than a02.
