Hello!

I just got a 2008 Scion xB around six months ago and in the next few months I will be doing my first oil change (using up the two complimentary services from the dealer). I will be switching to M1 Synthetics. Now the question is, the manual says I can use either 0w-20 or 5w-20.

What would be best to use? Should I put 0w-20 if the car allows it and not worry about anything? I have heard if it isn't freezing cold then don't bother with 0w-20 or something, but why not? It seems to make more sense to be able to use a thinner cold weight oil if you can, regardless of the temperatures outside.

Let me know how you guys feel about this... Both are readily available to me at my local stores.

Thanks alot!

Skip the M1 and try the Pennzoil Platinum 5W20 or 0W20 (available on-line - link in another thread here). Either weight will work fine. The xB comes with the 2.4 right? I've got the xD with the new 1.8 but don't have enough miles on it yet for any real UOA results.

You are foolish using syn oil for factory recommended oil change intervals, you won't see any advantage of the syn oil.

My '05 xB had 7.5k intervals for "non-severe" service. Now that's the 1.5l engine. I've used just about everything 5w30 in it for 5-6k OCIs.

I would use a good oil such as Motorcraft in the new xB and go for 4k as the interval. If you actually STILL like to change the oil go even shorter. I would also start a maintenance dose of A-Rx right now with the money you're saving on the synth.

0-20 in theory would be best.
When hot, they are virtually the same. When cold, the 0 would flow better.
But practically, no measureable difference.

I would use the 0W-20 unless the 5W-20 is a whole lot cheaper.

I agree that if you want to throw money away, Mobil 1 is a good choice.

If you think you might be able to use the difference for something else, a good conventional will protect your engine as well as M1, if not better (usually less Iron wear).

Once you are able to extend your oil change intervals to take advantage of synthetics, then something like Pennzoil Platinum or Amsoil, run for 7.5k+ miles/12k+ miles respectively, would also be a good choice.

Compared to all that, the difference between a 0W-20 and a 5W-20 is inconsequential.

One of my sons had a tC which has the same engine. Go with the 5W20 M-1 and the factory specified 5000 OCI. You will need to learn how to reset the maintenance reminder also. I've had 2 first gen xB's and go with the M-1EP 5w30 and the 5000 OCI for my warantee. My car has never been back to the dealer since I drove it off the lot 18,000 miles ago.

Just curious, why wouldn't you go with the 0W-20, is there a reason? The manual and oil cap say both 5W-20 and 0W-20. I don't know if the old TC's allow 0W-20, even though it is the same engine or if that is only for 2008's and above? Either way, is there a reason you chose 5W over the 0W?

I plan to do the 5000 OCI along with using the synthetic oil, regardless of what others may feel. I put it in my last car and the difference was noticeable compared to dino oil in a good way so I will continue to use it. Plus, after 3000K miles it was like the day it was put in, compared to the dino which was quite dirty after 3000k. I could tell the difference there alone, so im believer in using only full synthetics.

So please, no more posts about how I am "wasting" my money on using a superior oil! haha

But thanks for the feedback so far!

Every oil I use in my car stays "clean" way past 3k miles, does that make them superior?

Your not getting my point. I KNOW both conventional and synthetic oils can stay clean way past 3k. My point is, in my old car, compared to conventional oil, the synthetic stayed cleaner, longer.

I am not saying that is true in everybody's case, no, but in MY experience between the two.

Again, this thread is not about which type of oil I am using, but what weight I will be using, please keep it to that.

The pour points of 5w20 and 0w20 are the same according to the mobil1 website. In addition if you ever have the oil changed at the dealer, they will use 5w20 dino oil. So for the sake of consistency, i'd stick with 5w20.

Go with the 0W20, even in the hottest summers its still a 20W at operating temps...may yeild slightly better milage to boot.

I too have the xB. I live in San Diego.

I have done the past 4 or 5 changes with Pen. Plat. 5w30 and the engine loves it. On sale and after rebate, you can find it for $1/qt. As far as over-the-counter brands go, it is one of the best. Wear numbers are lower with PP than with M1.

Currently Im running Elf 0w30. I am sold on the 0w now and will be trying to use them exclusively from here on out. 0w are not just for cold weather, but easier startups becasue the oil flows faster.

Would it be ok to use the "hybrid" 0W-20 Pen. Platinum for the xB? Basically, is it like any other 0W20 oil?
