I stopped in pep boys today. They had Castrol 0/30 on the shelf, on the bottle it says Made in Belgium, Castrol 0/40 in the 5qt jugs says made in Belgium. Castrol 0/40 in 1qt bottles says made in Germany. So is the Castrol 0/40 in 1qt bottles the new GC. I guess the only way to tell would be to do a VOA on all 3?

The 0/30 said a/3 a/4 API SL

+1

EDGE 0W-30 has been made in Belgium for years, at least around here. I posted a UOA of it about a year back. Essentially the same add pack as 0W-40.

I ordered 12 x Castrol 0W-40 in 1 quart bottles off Amazon, and got the German version. The 3 x 5 quart jug I ordered at the same time were Belgian.

One thing I did notice is more lifter noise at startup with the Belgian version, which does not happen with the German blend. Noticed this on my Cologne SOHC V6 in the Explorer with 80,000 miles and my LL8 L6 on the Envoy with 118,000 miles, before I switched that M1 5W-30 ESP.

My take is the 5 quart bottles were more popular than the one quart bottles, which is why you can still get the German blended stuff in 1 quart offerings. The new blend is coming from Belgium, which is Group III based from what I have read on the forms.

I wonder if the startup rattle is because the hydrocracked blend is draining out of the lifters. It's not a bad product at all, not at $26 for 5 quarts shipped, but I do think the German blend was the better offering at the same price.

Maybe I should buy 5 1qt German bottles and see if I can tell a difference
