It's often a very passionate and sometimes heated discussion about engine break in oils, break in additives and break in procedures, but let me pose a question that I don't recall seeing as of yet.

What are your thoughts on the oil filter of choice to use for the first OCI on a new, reman or rebuilt engine?

Usually, I just slap on whatever filter it is that I'm using at the time after a rebuild and don't give it a second thought.

What are your thoughts?

You have a valid point there. Napa filters would be good for the first OCI. Especially since they are on sale right now.

Yep and for Engine break in I would go with the Gold. The Platinum is for EOCI's.

Use the same filter you would always use. Nothing special about a new engine as for oil filters.

I would use an E-core for sure

Filters are cheap; engines are not...

I wouldn't use an Ecore ... because they are cheap filters.

If you are talking about cartridge filters, then yes ... they all seem to be Ecore so you have no choice. But, seems the Ecore cartridge filters have a better center cage design then the Ecore spin-on filters I've seen.

I'll re-phase my statement. Ecores are not good filters IMO because they have a much higher potential than non-Ecore filters to blow the media out the center core and send it into the engine's oiling system.

I agree with ZeeOSix. I've cut open more questionable e-core filters than any other model. The spacing next to the seam is dangerously wide at times. This "seemed" to be worse with SuperTech filters than STP or AC/Delco's.

If you must use them, inspect before purchasing. The nice thing about the wide-open center tube, is you can clearly see the consistency of the pleat spacing before you leave the store.

As far as first OCI filter choice goes - I'd use whatever you'd normally use anyway. For me, that's Quaker State filters. I'm not a fan of Purolator customer service, but I can't beat the price on a quality budget filter.

On new/rebuilt engine break in periods, I'd recommend a real high filtration level to get and loose particles quickly. I would use a premium filter like a K&N or equivalent just for that purpose.

Wix/Napa same thing, Napa is cheaper and easier to find.

Wix is quite a bit cheaper than the Napa Gold in my area.

I could never find a Wix in my area so I always go with the Napa Gold. Wish some one sold them here so I can see the price of them.
