I'm confused, I thought the magnetec was the entry level synthetic the Castrol🤔 whatever happened to the days, conventional oil, durablend oil, synthetic oil!!! This is getting too difficult 😃😃
I think it's for people who have to move to synthetic who haven't yet and don't wanna pay as much. I think that is why Mobil busted out the Pegasus they shelved for a long time.

Weird that they're just introducing this with a Dexos 1 Gen 2 license, when those will be going away soon, and it's .92% ash so it's not Dexos 1 Gen 3 ready.

The only oil I've seen with Gen3 so far is actually the Mobil synthetic that is new. I think they actually removed it from the website after, there was a thread on it a few weeks ago. M1 and EP both don't have it yet either.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CASTROL GTX MAGNATEC?

  • 6X better wear protection
  • Intelligent molecules that cling to critical parts to provide an added layer of protection
  • 1.4X better sludge protection than required by the latest industry standard*

* As measured in the Seq. VH Sludge Test vs. API SP test limits

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GTX FULL SYNTHETIC?

Castrol GTX Full Synthetic helps extend engine life with:

  • Superior wear protection on critical engine parts
  • 6X better wear protection**
  • Superior sludge cleaning and protection against new formation
  • 1.3X better sludge protection*
  • Full synthetic formula provides thermal and oxidation stability
  • Superior level of protection against viscosity breakdown

**Superior wear protection on critical engine parts (6X better than industry standard)

*Superior sludge cleaning and protection against new formation (1.3X better sludge protection than industry standard)

The manufacturers should be in the process of getting licenses now, and the Dexos 1 Gen 2 licenses will become obsolete 9/1/2022.

CharlesInCharge is 7x better at interpreting and seeing thru marketing nonsense, and 1.4x better at refusing to be fleeced of his hard earned money!

(But 6x, and 1.4x, "better," than who or what?)
I guess industry standards... LOL
I used Castrol magnatec for the first time yesterday. On a friend's car that I was changing oil on.. Personally I'm using Kirkland signature series, with the Kirkland I noticed a difference immediately, but I was also only using a synthetic blend, that's probably why I noticed a difference..

An entry level synthetic?
So is Castrol Edge. ;)

They actually have quite different formulations. HTHS viscosity values were estimated by setting the base-oil +DDI VI to ~ 130. Noack values were estimated from the CCS values, assuming similar base oils according to the MSDSs. MSDSs also show that Edge uses a larger percentage of the heaver base stock, in agreement with the calculations.

Castrol Edge 5w30 SP:
  • HTHS viscosity: 3.05 cP
  • VII content: 4.7%
  • Base-oil viscosity at 150 °C: 2.26 cP
  • CCS: 4,660 cP
  • Noack (estimated): 10.5%
  • Ash content: 0.78%
Castrol GTX Full Synthetic 5w30 SP:
  • HTHS viscosity: 3.25 cP
  • VII content: 7.4%
  • Base-oil viscosity at 150 °C: 2.15 cP
  • CCS: 3,900 cP
  • Noack (estimated): 12.5%
  • Ash content: 0.92%
Estimated VII content and base-oil viscosity of selected oils

Neither is necessarily of superior quality to the other. They are both of non-GTL Group III. GTX Full Synthetic is made from a thinner base oil with more VII added to thicken it, and it also has more ash, possibly meaning a higher TBN.
