I have Red Line 0w40 and Royal Purple 5w40. Which one should I use? I understand neither one meets VW specs but that is not my concern at all. I will let the BITOGER's decide what goes next in it. You have no worry at all about warranty if something goes wrong from an engine defect and they try to blame your oil on it?
I would not feel comfortable recommending between two non-VW specs.
You have a fantastic car! As cheap as some of the in-spec oils can be found on sale, like Mobil 1 0w40, why not use an in spec product and cover your basis?
Enjoy that car though, again, that must be a fun one to hop in and drive!

Very true, don't take chances with non approved oil or filters for a new car, but do figure out if the recommended OCI is too long, although if you make a warranty claim in the US that is rejected because of using a non Audi approved oil they have to prove the oil was the cause of the engine failure, which for a major brand recommended oil would be difficult for them, unless you signed some extended warranty deal that dictates oil type as most do.

I think you are NUTS not to use an oil that meets the specs. If you can afford a 2013 Audi, you can afford to buy some oil and save your stash for another vehicle. They have the specs for a reason.

This is why I do not keep a "stash", it just seems like another form of hoarding. You always have oil around that you do not really want to use!!
I can think of many cars that had massive warranty issues that the owner would not learn of until a several years have passed......

IMO.....using a non-spec oils is not a prudent move....especially since it might effect your warranty. You can sell it, or use it for other vehicles.
Mobil 1 0w40....is highly touted by many BITOG'ers...and IMO would be perfect for your new Audi. Its a top-tier oil that can hardly be beat...and can be found everywhere.

K. Well I agree with everyone about warantee retention and why risk it however if you want to ignore it that's up to you.
Either of those oils will work. If you are going to go against the grain I suggest doing used oil analysis' throughout the oil change intervals so you can at least see how the engine is wearing.
I'm pretty sure red line suggests not using their oils until after 5000 miles on engine. At least the bottles I have say that.

You have MB E350, what oil do you use in that car ? M1 0W40 ? Why not use the same oil in the Audi ?

Both oils will be heavier than necessary but I suspect the RP 5W-40 will be the lighter of the two so that's what I'd go with.
Once that's used up, I'd pick up enough RL 0W-20 (same oil as the 0W-40 but without the polymer thickeners) to mix 50/50 with the RL 0W-40 to create a heavy 0W-30. I have other suggestions as well; PM me if interested.

If the oil you use, doesn't meet the Audi spec .. all that they would have to point out is .. that the oil you used did not meet their spec. Not sure why you are laser focused on not following Audi's requirements.

I'd like to point out that to get specs like the VW Spec & Mercedes Spec, the oil companies even have to buy the additives from *specific* sources. It is very detailed to be able to get an OE spec.
While some of the requirements to get these approvals might be silly, the overall approval is not something to ignore. While I understand in your case, you are not trying to use some cheap dino oil, you never know what they might try to pull on you to void your warranty.
Do Audis not come with a few oil changes free? Mercedes don't, and I always thought BMW & Audi try to use that against Mercedes. (Edit, I guess Audi cut out the free program. Makes sense to me otherwise you're paying for it with MSRP).

Make sure that when you do change the oil that you use a FRAM filter.

Besides echoing what others have said about the use of a specified oil to preserve warranty (VW 502.00, unless something has changed), you may want to leave the factory fill in for the full recommended interval. From hanging out at the various VW fora, some VAG owners who change the factory fill early occasionally report higher than average consumption rates thereafter. After the first change, you can change it as early as you like.

get an oil that meets the spec's or get the stealer to do the oil changes most of them are priced so you dont go other places...Dont take any chances that engine is expensive we just did an audi that the customer went through water and it cost a lot just in parts..
