I went looking at a Hyundai Sonata and Genesis this past Wednesday and the new car smell really made me uncomfortable. We all know that smell is not good to your health but I don't know why they are so strong now verse in 2002 when I bought my fresh Accord V6 Coupe top of the line from the delivery trailer.

By the way, I was extremely impressed with the Sonata and Genesis. The Genesis is a little big for me and I think the price tag is a high for a car that don't have some of the safety features of the Bimmer and Merc that it tries to compete with. It also doesn't have AWD like the Acura RL. However, the Sonata is very nice and I find its I4 engine very good on highway. The fit and finish is very nice and the body style is a best copy of the Mercedes CLK. If I was in the market for a new car, I probably buy a Sonata.

Outgassing from cheap plastics. It doesn't go away for a very long time (years) so if it bothers you now it will for a very long time. Suggest looking for a car with higher quality materials that doesn't produce as much outgassing. Nausea and headaches are the two most common effects I have experienced and heard about from others.

I just drive with windows open as much as possible and let the vehicle sit in the sun to keep it warm-with windows cracked. Usually goes away in a few wekks or months.

I didn't know plastic, cheap or otherwise, even had much of a smell. I always thought it was the leather and fabrics that made the new car smell.

Our '04 Jag, G8, and Solstice still have that new car smell, the Torrent that hauls the dogs, um, not so much.

I like it at low levels, but some of the cheaper cars offgas to the point where it is pungent.

After a few days even the worst materials aren't emitting enough gas to be dangerous. It's very easy for the psychological effect to trigger severe nausea, but that shouldn't be confused with direct physical damage from the materials.

'I don't like the smell, therefore it must be dangerous' is not valid reasoning. There would be a lot of foods banned if subjective reactions to smells is the only criteria.

The new car smell is 90% gone from our 8 month old Altima. And that car has a ton of "cheap" plastics.

From what I have read and observed, the Korean cars have the most unpleasant smelling interiors. I suspect it's the cheap plastic and/or manufacturing process.

Pretty accurate observation.
