Hey guys,

I have a real weekend car now, a brand new 05 s2k. As of right now, I have just reached the 1000 mile mark, and have now started to beat and let the engine sing da vtec song. But, I dont want to leave the stock oil in for to long, so heres some questions.

1. I'm going to get the oil change asap. I have 5 free oil changes at the stealership, so how long should I go on the dino? Ive read on here that its semi-syn, so I think I will go 2k at each interval? Provide enough protection? Then move on to m1 at around the 10k mark.

2. At what point should I get a lab report on used oil at? 2nd oil change, 3rd?

3. Does anyone know if the s2k filters are still the same ones from 2-3 years ago, because some reports have said that honda outsources them now to another sub par company.

4. What weight should I use in sunny so cal? 5w30 since its high revving? This car will probably get about 500 miles a month, max. Probably in the 5-7k a year, I believe. The trunk is too **** small for road trips tho.

Sorry for the long questions, and thanks again.

Honda specs 10w30 for that engine. 5w30 cause it's high revving?

10w30 if it's high revving

If the s2k factory fill is like other honda engines' factory fill, Id say to leave it in for as long as the manual suggests. Then do 1-2k OCIs on whatever the dealer will give you (If its M1, which it may be, Id stretch it out to 5+k mi OCI).

Id do a used oil analysis from the start, to get a baseline and trend downward from original.

if it is a high revving engine (of course we know that is true), you would want a more shear stable oil. 10w30 will edge out 5w30 in that regard. Given that youre in Socal, it is even smarter to go 10w30. You dont need the cold start abilities as much for the most part, and a 10w- may actually be thinner at the temperatures you encounter than a 5w-

Go with Mobil 1 10w30 when youre all done, I thin thats a good oil to settle into with Honda engines.

Good luck!

Ask the dealer if he will put in a good syn oil for you if you pay the difference between that and the freebie oil.

Of if he won't do that if he will put in syn oil you take in and still give you the free labot and filter.

The second option is the safest for you. The shop simions are so used to using their standard oil that sometimes you get it when you ask for syn. It's happend to me twice that I know.

No need to do 2,000 mile changes with any decent oil.

its true that there is no need to do 2000 mi changes with a decent oil, but if the dealer is unwilling to give syn or use his own parts, that it may be best to let them do their stuff the way theyre comfortable, use the free OCs to keep the engine very clean and remove all the break in junk, and then by using 5 xhanges at 2000mi each, that puts himn at 10k, a perfect time to switch to syn.

Congratulations on the S2000

1000 mi. is about where I change the factory fill on my new cars. Don't forget the transmission and rear end, they will be full of metal particles, also.

I agree, I think the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 would be ideal for that car. Redline would be another great choice if driven hard. The reason I'd go with both of these oils is their ability to maintain their viscosity.

Does the manual say anything about leaving the factory fill in for break-in purposes?

Thats exactly the thing that we need to know. Most Hondas have a special break-in oil, that SHOULD be left in for the first 10k miles. What does the manual say about a break-in oil? Id try and leave it in there if there is the slightest mention of a special factory break-in oil.

Check out S2K forum, their consensus looks to keep factory fill in per manual then use dino up to 10k miles with shortish OCI's, then switch to syn.

If the dealership uses Honda oil, I think that's a pretty good oil. I'd go at least 3K between free dealer changes. Search you owner's manual for info on how long to leave in factory oil and drain intervals, that's your best source of info. Stay with the factory recommended viscosity during warranty period.

haha jtantare. That mobil site is wrong tho, they increased the size of the engine in 04 to 2.2 from 2.0, trust me the engine needed the additional torque badly!

Anyways, I will post on the s2k forums to see what they think the break in period.

We all agree that the first oil change will have metal shavings from the break in, correct? So keeping that in the engine for a prolonged time, regardless if it has special break in oil is bad right?

I feel 1k miles for a break in oil is long enough, and will get the engine, transmission and diff drained and refilled.

Thanks for the help guys!

I don't think we all agree on this. I'd stick with the recommendations of the manufacturer and/or seek out info from the S2000 community as to the proper break-in procedure and first oil change interval.
