Hey guys, my sister is looking at a 2011 Nissan sentra. She knows about my fascination with BITOG, so she has asked me for an OCI plan for her car.
My Plan (What I have always done): 1st at 1500, 2nd at 3000, 3rd at 5000 and then every 3K with dino or 5K with full synthetic. This schedule has worked for me in the past (whatever that means! haha), what im wondering though is, her car is spec'd for 5W30. Ive got a stash of valvoline 5W20 coming in within in the next week (THANK YOU AMAZON!), will using 5W20 for the first 4 oil changes going to be ok, or can I run into problems?
Thanks for the help!

3K oci with conventional is a waste of natural resource, IMHO.

I'd keep running conventional til 5K or syn til 7K if I were you.

Q.

What is the mfg recommended oil change interval for this vehicle?

But I agree that 3K oil changes are a waste unless you fall under the severe operating conditions.

mfg recommends 3750 severe service, or 7500 light duty. Thats why I would like to split the difference and call it a day at 5K with full syn.

Is 5w20 vs 5W30 going to accelerate any wear-and-tear or cause any problems?

I agree with above posts, 5k/6mo OCI with dino under normal condition with spec'ed 5W30 during warranty. After warranty you may try 5W20 for 1 or 2 OCI's to see how it works.

Follow the OM and use a 30 grade oil which Nissan specs. If you have an oil related problem and they find the 5W20 you bought from Amazon in the sump you might be in for a surprise, and not a very nice surprise. Once the warranty is up use any grade oil you like.

7500 normal duty with dino oil. No problem. Anything less, without good reason, is a waste of oil. How long do you think she'll own the car?...trying for a half-million miles?...you might be OK with better than average oil. The usual ownership time & mileage?...Nissan's recommendations won't let you down.

Well, we just don't know if 5w20 has adequate film strength for every contact point in those engines. Stick with the 5W30.

Drain the FF at 1-1.5K, run a second change of cheap but proper API spec oil, then go to normal drains.
If Nissan recommends 5w30, don't use a 20.
Nissan has their reasons and I'd trust them on this.
You can easily do 5K on any shelf Grp III syn (or Grp II conventional), and almost certainly much longer.

Thanks for the help everyone! My sister usually keeps her cars for 5-7 years, racking up approx 100K or less miles, so its nothing drastic.
Im going to recommend 5K with regular dino, her driving is in no way severe, and she wont keep the car for 250K miles so running full syn is most likely a waste.
Now I just have to figure out when to use my 5W20 stash!

Syn oil is not needed for an engine to go 250K miles.

Q.
I am sure the oil gets recycled or burned for fuel. Just think of the waste of recources the government is doing keeping the military running in circles.

Here is the best advise. If you do your own oil change, do 3k OCI or whatever. Else follow the computer on your car.

Drained my factory fill in my Honda at 3K miles, plan on doing my next OC at 5k miles (dino) and we'll see from there.

Car is running great at 3.5K miles :P

if your target is only 7 yrs or 100K miles you could most likely run 0w10 for 10K miles and still get there. Im not saying do that. If your worried about the 5w20, mix it with the 5w30 in the winters and the engine will never know the difference. In fact the engine may welcome the lower viscosity as it gets pretty cold up there. Your really splitting hairs.

Two important things noted in this thread.

1) The CVT will definitely die before the engine.
2) 100k miles is nothing for a car engine.

Just change the oil often enough to keep the warranty with the cheapest oil you can get and you're fine.
