New Car - Long Long Summer Trip?

Leave it go...drive. I'd be surprised that after the trip if both cars are below 50% on OLM. Highway is easy driving and hopefully you encounter some hills to give the engine a good run in.

Cars are built and bought to be driven these days without thought...seriously.

Enjoy your trip...leave FF in.

This thread reminds me of going on vacation with my grandparents in the late 60's. Grandpa picked up a new Galaxy 500 Friday night, took it home and hitched up the boat and pulled it from central Iowa to northern Minnesota and didn't think a thing about it.

Different era - I know.

Back from vacation. Drove a total of 4,883.5 miles. (3536 were to/from) - 1,347 miles driven in Iowa.

Really enjoyed the drive. Did 17 hours the first day and 9 the next. The Civic did a lot better up/down the Rockies than my Sunfire ever did. Averaged 35mpg overall over there at ~90mph+ (cough). Averaged 38.7mpg back at 85mph. Oil Life Monitor says 50%. Total miles on car = 6670 miles now. So, around 11,339 it should be at 85%. Have several knicks in paint on hood/bumper but vacation was worth it. Almost hit 6 deer (had 1 almost hit me).

I was forced to drive 20+ min of gravel one time because of the flooding in Iowa while someone was in front of me (no cellular reception = no google maps). Should I be worried about that getting/being into/in the oil?

The air filter looks pretty well used but I always had an OCD for spotless air filters. But I'm planning on changing it when I get my oil changed.

Would you guys change the factory fill oil or run it out to MM (85% oil life) now that the trip is done? Estimating ~500-700 miles a month max now.

PS. Thanks for all the advice!!!

Leave the air filter go, a clean air filter just means it is new. A dirty one is doing it's job.

Until the air filter becomes a restriction just let it be.

If you start doing short trips a lot the OLM will drop fairly quick. If it doesn't asked to me changed before the start of fall & cooler weather I'd get it done then. Fresh oil for the winter is a good thing.

BTW it counts down from 100% not up.

NOT...Unless I'm misunderstanding something...@ 11K+ miles OLM should be (well maybe, because OLM changes with driving conditions/style) 15% NOT 85%...

Yeah my bad, I meant 85% used not life left, lol. I understand it counts down. Had a good laugh at myself for that post.

OK good - so the gravel run shouldn't be enough to change the oil. Will continue on. Thanks

One of my friends has a 2012 Civic that she bought new. The car has spent its entire life at 80-85mph from day 1. No issues to date, at 32k. I ran the factory oil to 6500 miles and replaced with Toyota 0w-20. After that, it saw two bulk fills of Honda syn-blend 0w-20 at 8k intervals, and now it has Mobil 1 0w-20. The OLM on her car will call for a service at about 11k.

I'm surprised the first interval is not lower. My Subaru has a regular OCI of 7,500 miles but the first one is 3,000 miles.

Honda manufactures some of THE BEST engines in the world for passenger vehicles, if they recommend leaving the FF in for a certain mileage I would heed that advice.

Again, Honda is one manufacturer that still uses a special break in factory fill with a high moly content in it. The oil filter also does it job just fine and will trap any particles that are of a significant size, if any of which there are probably none.

I am aware of what you stated. I have owned many Hondas&Toyotas.
Still my comments stand.

When I bought my 2002 Taco it had 8 miles. Drove it normal till 5K and changed the factory fill. 151K later no oil burning or issues.

Thanks CaspianM for that UOA link. I used to run GC Gold/Green 0w30 in my Sunfire every 2-3k (yes, I admit I had a serious OCD). So leaving the factory fill in this long is insane but even Patman suggests that it should be fine either way.

I'm hoping the Civic's 1.8L i4 is easier on oil than the Accord - maybe that's why the MM is suggesting 11k+ miles?

Yesterday, I went to the Honda Dealership's new owner's dinner - they raffled off some really cool prizes (tanks of gas, details, oil changes, stuff - I got a car car kit). They gave us a tour of the dealership - we even got to talk to Honda techs for a good half hour. One tech showed us an old Civic manual trans where the owner had broken teeth off of the brass gearing and sheered down the heavier teeth (he had it in pieces). Was REALLY impressed with the whole thing.

I noticed there was only Honda 0w20 Semi-Synthetic on the part's floor. Maybe you have to ask for the Full Synthetic? I didn't have time to ask.

@garlicbreadman - I agree.

Honda new owner dinner???? Never even heard of that from my dealer and all three of my Honda's were from them. Hmmmm....I've been missing out in free dinners??? DANG!!!! There was a recall on certain year CRV's, included mine, for reflashing the program that had something to do with oil consumption about a year ago. May want to see if your year was included and whether this was done or not.
