New cabin filter

Went into my local Ford dealer to pick up a part, and they had actual cabin filters from cars that were brought in for service. OMG! Leaves, completely black, something that looked like mouse fur.. and they were inhaling this stuff! People, change your filters!

I didn't plan on getting a cabin filter, but it got me thinking. Bought one and installed it. The old one wasn't that bad, but dirty enough..

Yeah, I change cab filters every 1-2 years.

I thought they were silly until I changed my wife's Sonata's after 2 years....it was dirtier than any engine air filter I have ever changed.

I just let my squirrel cage blower grind up the mice into tiny bitesize bits! Just imagine we breathe unfiltered outdoor air all these past years - how did we survive? How is it we are still alive?!

Replacement interval will all depend on where you live and the driving conditions. I've replaced the filters in both of our cars when they had their 2-year "birthdays". In both cases, the filter wasn't that bad and could have easily gone (at least) another year. But since cabin filters are oftentimes a pain to get at and relatively inexpensive, while I had it out, I decided I might as well put the new one in.

With all that DIRTY AIR out there, it's amazing they still make windows that ROLL DOWN!

My point being that it's not the air I'm concerned about, it's the air passing through the modly filthy filter carrying spores and stinkiness along with it.

Changed mine out at ~25 K miles and it looked extreamly good. Maybe the lack of industry here in SW Florida helps. When I lived in Northern ILL, my filters needed changing once a year.

I'm always dumping debris out of my wifes Subaru CAF (leaves pine needles, seeds and tree fuzz) but I have yet to buy one for her. The filter should keep the spores OUT of the air if it's not torn, on the dirty side of the filter, that's why it's called a filter. If you dont like it, you could eliminate it, but its good to keep large debris out of the HVAC fan.

RANT: These 3 dollar items are a complete, absolute, silly rip off at over 10>30 bucks ea. Many guys buy a large 3m filter as used in your home AC air handler then cut it up and remanufacture it to fit in your car CAF slot. A little cardboard and hot glue and an hour will yield you five or more units for under 10 bucks - then you can change 2x per year or more and feed the Howard Hughes in you

I vacuum them at 30K miles and replace at 60K miles.
